The Commission No 16 was founded in the meeting of Amsterdam 1990, providing the contribution of engineering geology to the protection of ancient monuments and archaeological sites. It has 48 members from Albania, Australia, Bulgaria, China, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Korea, Malta, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Turkey, UK, USA and Yugoslavia.
The first task of this Commission is to collect data on the situation of each country regarding the protection of ancient monuments and historical sites, mainly as engineering geology is concerned. This information is classified in order to prepare a Data Bank and a succinct final report. In this framework, an information questionnaire was prepared and sent, for completion, to the members of the Commission as well as to the Presidents of the National Groups. This questionnaire was discussed in the meeting of Lisbon ’94, during the 7th IAEG Congress and the remarks were included in a new text which was distributed between the members of the Commission.

The next meeting of the Commission No 16 is scheduled to be held during the IAEG Congress, in Athens (June 1997).
