Thank you for this site. There are not that many of us here in the Tulsa/Green Country area of Oklahoma. I had no idea that even a history of men in nursing existed. Being an LPN of ten years tenure,I have always been proud of what I do, in spite of the n gative view accrued to our sex in this still predominantly female field. I am finally returning to school for my RN. Please feel welcome to email me. It would be a real honor to have a copy of your historical work. Sincerely, Mark T. Hall, LPN

If you could be helpful, would you please e-mail me. The site you maintain would be absolutely useful for the historicala perspective. Thanks. Dr. Serdar K. Han

Interesting site. Just surfing and wanted to see what I could find on nursing history of when men were graduating from schools. I did not expect to find much or how far back this history went. I have work with some very good nurses in the last 17 years th t were men. I am always interested in patient reactions to genders in nursing. It is great to find this history.

I discovered your site today (23 December 1999) and found it to be an excellent history of Men in Nursing. For years I have been fighting the image of the "Male Nurse", finding that to be so overly biological, rather than professional. I have also felt ab ndoned by the ANA and the NLN, as thier primary focus has been on Women's issues. I have no problem with Women's issues being addressed by a profession that is primarily staffed by women in this age, however to the extent of neglecting the men in the prof ssion, it gets a bit old. THank you for the refreshing look at our lot in life. Sid

We can learn from history, and we continue to repeat mistakes of the past, but we cannot change it. Wrong! The history of Nursing was changed, and any mention of men as early leaders is usually met with smug indifference, arrogant denial, and as anyone wh has attended a nursing program in America can see, excluded from the curriculum. As one Professor of nursing confided in me "...if men dominated the profession early in American history, we would be a lot better off today..."

I would be interested in'talking' to American RNs because the more I surf he net the more it seems you guy have a much harder time than we do in the UK (we even have men who practices as qualified midwifes - who needs doctors!) A good page keep up the good work. Perhaps we should have an International Assembly of Male Nurse.

Of course I am throughly informed about th female history of nursing. Thanks again for a very informative site. God bless

Great reading and reason for a website. I also enjoyed reading about the history of nursing in general. Since nurses may have patients affected by CreutzfeldtJakob Disease, the infectious rapidly progressive fatal brain-deteriorating disease, I invite y u to my website Blood Recall/Withdrawal - CJD at the above listed URL. Also, you may want to read the collection of stories on the Many Faces of CJD website at http://members.aol.com/stacy91434/cjd/cjd.htm People describe early symtpoms and progression o the disease. There are about 25 stories now. In a Yale University study 13% of clinically diagnosed Alzheimer patients were found on autopsy to have CJD.

I am excited to see your web page, and relieved! I am a third year nursing student who is currently being subjected to the teachings of feminism left, right and center! When I discussed this somewhat discriminative approach with my instructors, they jus said that there simply was not enough information on the subject of men in nursing. I proceeded to write a paper about reversed discrimination in the classroom and would like to include some articles about men in nursing for my paper. If you can refer e to some that would be great! I am a female, but I am not a feminist. I do believe in equality if it can be achieved, but I do not like how our program and the nursing community focuses on the desparity of women and the abuse women take in nursing. I ould write forever, but it would be nice to hear your input. My email is collette_t@hotmail.com. Hope to hear from you soon! Take care.

But anyway, thank you very much for all the information you provided at your site. I will be sure to contact this page for any additional information. Fine site ... and good comments from visitors. I've been an inner city Level I trauma O.R. nurse in the Boston area. Leaving O.R. for Med/Surg at a progressive Assisted Living facility. I've many feelings concerning nursing ... it's an excellent profes ion to be in ... and it's an art that is so necessary to the common good of our society, but has been delegated by our culture to the fixed social underclass (ie. women). And to the care givers are conferred the image (at times) of the whore female nurse nd the queen male nurse. No offense ... but society seems to fear the world that we work so well in .. the world most folks will come to ... and they tar us like they tar so many others they fear. Not to be a bore, but when I reflect about my social sta ding as a male nurse, that's what comes to mind first ... and that I have never once regretted being a nurse. Some of the greatest works in our society have come from its many outcasts ... and those that cast us out will never know what richness we've com to find ... and have. Best wishes.

At the risk of sounding a bit negative, Males in this field need to network if not unionize to better approximate the pay and benefits of teachers who work regular hours with no shift or weekend or Holidays yet make 10 to 20K more than we do for a similar educational preparation. I do love being a nurse of 10 years experience, have a supervisory position of massive responsibility yet feel like I am on piece work type payscale, with no hope of improvement. Opportunities are hard to come by in New England w thout a masters or better credential. Many new grads can't even find work! Do appreciate your site, men need to network, we are a minority in nursing still we function on a par with any female. Men tend to work together better and get more done. Thanks again for a wonderful thought provoking site!

Interested in a National Association for the advancement of men in nursing. Though we number less than 1% of all nurses (Last know percentage I know of) Unless we want to continue to accept a reduced payscale but an increased workload. Will need to netw rk if not Unionize to seek better career potential. at least this is the case here.

Let me extend my thanks for this very informative page. I really appreciate it and I am very much interested more to know about the organization. Here in our country, the Philippines, we don't have any organization of male nurses. By the way, I am the Nat onal President of the Occupational Health Nurses Association of the Philippines, (OHNAP), Inc. Our association has around 5,000 members and 1/4 of it are male nurses. We are looking forward of communicating to anybody especially exchange of ideas, experie ces, reasearch and alike especially in the field of occupational health & safety. We take this oppurtunity to invite those interested to visit our country and know more of Filipino Nurses. Again, thank you very much for the information and hope to hear from your group too.

I'm a male nurse ready to graduate from a 2 year program. I've read your entry and find it very informative. I didn't realize how deep our roots go. The program that I'm involved in is 95% female students and 100% female instructors. I've been reading som interesting articles on issues of gender segregation and hidden advantages to being a male nurse, So it really was really interesting for me to read your article. I have no medical experience other than my school and clinicals so I don't know enough abo t this subject to draw any conclusions. I'm just glad that someone out there cares about the men in nursing.

Thank you for all your work. For me it was so difficult to identify that I wanted to become a nurse. It seems "the path" is often circuitous. (EMT,paramedic, etc). Nothing wrong with those professions but the male nurse is a comparatively hidden presence in American society and that makes it hard when we look around for role models. Also there are so many myths and prejudices to dispell. Your site is very helpful.

Great site for public education. Maybe a page for those of us looking for meaty research in this area would be helpful. As a nurse and a husband of a PhD can. in gender studies I'd like to remind all that it truley is the strides that have been made gen er equality by woman that have allowed for the challenging of "typical " gender roles, including the notion that men have a great deal to contribute to the arena of prof. nursing. BRAVO!!!! Finally the stereotype of nursing being the sole domain of women is broken. I also am a male nurse and damn proud of it. But it is amazing how many female nurses still feel threatened by men in this profession. I think you should forward thi info. to nursing training organizations and colleges across the U.S. for inclusion into their degree programs. Male nurses would really find it a "shot in the arm" for their own self image and morale. Thanks again for a great web-page.

Nice work!!! Loved reading through all the info on Men in Nursing History. Like many have already said you've provided me with more "ammo" to combat the women I work with. For many years I've referred to as "one of the girls". Men need to stand up more fo themselves in this female dominated profession. A note to gay and proud - why no name or address? I've been a nurse for 13 years, worked in CA.(started in the San Francisco area),WI, and now at the Mayo Clinic where the unit I work has 20 males including the Nurse Manager and I have as yet not met a single gay male nurse. Your comment just perpetuates the myth that most men in nursing are gay. NOT TRUE !!! 'Nough said. Again great page.

Visited your site as part of assignment for Dr. Pat Donahue's class in history of nursing (PhD level) at Univ. of Iowa. We are supposed to browse through "historically-relevant" web sites. This has been fun. Do you worry about the future of historical inquiry in the electronic world? If not, do you have an idea of what the future of historical research will be like? This concerns me as I look through the web and think about how our methods of communicating and recording our history is changing. Thank for putting this neat site on the web. Peg

I was a little shocked at the comment made by gay and proud. The content of the statement "most if not all the male nurses I know are gay" is a sweeping generalization that places most if not all male nurses into a categorie. The content of this stateme t is very uncharacteristic of one who is intelligent and educated enough to call himself a nurse. Please do not misunderstand this comment. It would be just as offensive to many of us if the statement were "most if not all the nurses I know are straight or female, or white, or black".

We are a two-career family and both of us are RN's. I am glad to see more men in nsg. It is pas time that the matriarchal stereotype should have broken down. It is education and experience, intuition and nuturing, compassion and assertive behavior wrapped into a caring profession of patient advocacy that has nothing to do with gender but everything to do with being human. Nice little girls won't make it in nursing today, neither will nice little boys. Competent, dedicated, caring adults will.

I'm glad to see more men getting into nursing. But we all still think of a woman as a nurse. Let's stop it. Good luck guys.

It is refreshing to see that men have had a history of serving as nurses. I am frequently asked why I did not choose to become a doctor. Your web page has given me the ammo to p ove that men also have a rich tradition in nursing. audio/xÉ`«€

I enjoyed the t pic of your page, but wondered why it was "American" history. Since one of your first notations includes the first nursing school cira 250 BC, perhaps nursing has a larger history than just the US. ;)

The information you presented was infomative and entertaining. I am the one who sent out the survey you esponded to. Where did you find the resources for your research? The libraries available to me have nothing on the subject of men in nursing. If I did not have access to the internet, I would be doing a research paper on the lack of sufficient local libr ries. Thanks for sharing your site, and the information you must have painstakingly researched. "Keno" Bob
