Agape Toastmasters
Valley Cathedral, long the home of Valley Toastmasters, now has
spawned a second club. The founding president, Gail Allen, always
wanted to join a club, but there wasn't one convenient for her work schedule.
Gail thought, "We'll start our own!" The process of building a club was
very satisfying for her.
According to Gail, the members of Agape Toastmasters are a diverse
group of people, with officers ranging in age from 23 to 70. "One thing
we all have in common is a spiritual focus. We mesh beautifully."
Two people were influential in starting Agape Toastmasters. Gail Allen
credited one of the Valley Cathedral pastors, Bill Mauntino, for
supporting the church. "He thinks Toastmasters is a fantastic vehicle for
training people." He encouraged many to join the club. Art Nieto
was also a driving force. "Sometimes Art, me and one guest would be the
only ones at the meeting. He was so supportive through this all."
One new Toastmaster, Michael Guilds, began his career with the
ministry after visiting the Agape Club. Just returning from Europe and
Turkey, the club held a special meeting in his honor as he told of his
experiences. "If I had not been a part of
Toastmasters, I would not have been prepared." Gail reported that there
wasn't a dry eye in the club after Michael finished.
Honeywell Spoken
Two new clubs have been started on the premises of the Honeywell Company
in Phoenix. Chad Joplin, the President of Honeywell Spoken, said,
" Art Nieto and Roy Blomquist and the American Expressors
club have done some great work with our group."
There are three main divisions of Honeywell. We are in Industrial Automation
and Control. Our membership now is made up mostly of Honeywell people.
We have quite a range of people from Engineering, Finance, Sales and Project
Management. Our club is an interesting mix of all types of people. Most
of our members are new to public speaking but eager for the Toastmaster
experience. I see how many of us will use Toastmasters in our work. Honeywell
Spoken is, however, open to everyone in the community.
Honeywell Spoken chartered as District Three's newest club on August
15, 1997.
