How To Perform Hajj

Assalam Alaikum

To perform Hajj you needed to be mentally set and physically set. If you have no patience then you can stop thinking about going until you have enough. Because if you don't have patience then you won't make it. For elder people you should start walking every day for a month before you go because you do lots of walking. For adults and kids who are in good shape shouldn't have to worry about that.

Before performing Hajj you need to make sure if you got your passport ready. Make sure it is valid for 6 months. Be sure you have applied for a Hajj visa and others like that. Please visit saudiembassy.net if you would like to know more about what Saudi Arabia would like you to have to get into the country. Some items to bring are Ihram Clothes, Sandals, Personal Clothes, Umbrella, Money, Passport and Plane Ticket, and Vaccination Card. Be sure to take all your medication because there are a lot of germs between 2 million people. Also you need to take sunscreen for protection from the sun. Before you go you must be sure to pay off all your debts. You don't need to worry about food because there is always food.

There are three types of hajj. Hajj-Ul-Tamattu, which is Umrah and Hajj done separately, Hajj-Ul-Qiran, which is Umrah and Hajj done together, and Hajj-Ul-Jfrad, which is just the Hajj. I am going to tell you how to perform Hajj-Ul-Tamattu because it is the most common out of the three.

Before you start, you must learn the talbiyah.

Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk,

Labbayk La Sharika Laka Labbayk,

Innal Hamda Wanni'mata Laka Walmulk,

La Sharika Lak.

You should remember to recite this as you are traveling toward Makkah. Next you should have your Ihram on before you reach the miqat.

If you don't have it on by the time you reach the miqat you have to pay a fine, which is either S.R.100 or a slaughtering of an animal.

When you reach Makkah the first thing you should do is to go to the Masjid-Al-Haram. If possible, you should enter through the As-Salaam gate. But during Hajj, the Saudi government usually closes that gate due to the rush. You start doing Tawaf, which is circling the Ka`bah 7 times. Before you start you should stop saying Talbiyah. After you finish doing the 7 rounds, you should pray 2 rakats behind Muqam-E-Ibrahim. When finished you should drink the Zamzam water. Next you go to Safa and Marwah and make Sa`ee. You start from the Safa mountain and walk to the Marwah mountain. That is one round. Walking from the Marwah mountain to the Safa mountain is two rounds and so forth. You should finish on the Marwah mountain. There are two green lights where you should run in between. After finishing the Sa`ee you should cut your hair and after cutting your hair you will be out of Ihram and that ends Umrah. Now you are free to do whatever you want until the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah.

On the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah you should put on your Ihram and head for Mina before noon. You stay in Mina and pray your 5 prayers until the next day. The next day you leave Arafat, keep reciting Talbiyah. Here you stay until sunset. After sunset leave for Muzdalifah. You sleep in Muzdalifah until sunrise. At sunrise you leave for Mina to stone the Al-Jamrat Al-Kubra. Here you throw 7 pebbles at Al-Jamrat Al-Kubra. You should stop reciting Talbiyah at time. From there you should slaughter a sacrifice. When finish with the slaughtering, you cut your hair, and then you are out of Ihram.

After cutting your hair you should go back to Makkah and do Tawaf and Sa`ee. When finished, you should go back Mina. The next day, 11th of Dhul-Hijjah, you stone all three Jamarats. (Smallest to largest) Then spend the night in Mina. The next day you do the same thing. Stone the Jamarats and stay the night in Mina. The next day you go to Makkah and do your farewell Tawaf. (No Sa`ee) After finishing your Tawaf, you leave to go back home or where ever you might be going.
