Brujeria

Mexican Brujeria
Among the Mexican traditions, there are many kinds of practices known generically as Brujeria, spanish for witchcraft. We classify them mainly by their origin and intentions. These categories are:

The 'Commercial' Brujeria. A half breed between pre-Hispanic traditions and European religion and superstitions. It consists mostly in healing, protection and cleaning of bad energy (the popular ‘cleanings’) when it is white magick; or hexes, curses and varied damaging, binding, controlling and other spells and amulets when it is black magick. Both kinds are so full of Christian / satanic prayers and ceremonies that the pre-Hispanic components are very difficult to find. This is an excellent business all over the country so it is obviously full of opportunistic frauds that take away most of its credibility. We will only marginally touch this subject in these pages, when some useful lore is found.

Shamanism. This is the Mexican Natural Magic, the true Brujeria. It is contaminated by European religion in varying degrees, depending on how far from the main cities you look, but most of its pre-Hispanic contents are still there. Mostly healing and herb lore, it is rich in tradition, ceremony and natural empirical knowledge. The study of Mexican Shamanism will greatly enrich the magick book of any practitioner, as will all the myths and lore surrounding it.

Nagual (nagualism). A very controversial tradition, starting with the definition of a Nagual. Depending on which region of the country you ask, a Nagual is a powerful magician, a natural spirit or a demon, among other beliefs; most of the lore agrees it is immensely powerful. A Nagual is supposed to cause mischief at every opportunity, going from the biggest scare of your life to disease or death. We will explore the nagual magick from the assumption that it’s a magician, trying to understand and use the positive aspects of its power. We sometimes refer to it as a natural spirit in some of the myth & lore sections of these pages. Whatever they are, the Naguales have a bagfull of tricks and knowledge that is always worth looking into. From a safe distance.

Myths, lore & popular beliefs. All over the country, especially in remote places, there are pre-Hispanic traditions and customs related to Magick and the supernatural. We will include sections on this subject in our pages to help you get a better understanding of the magic of the ancient people of the land. Sometimes we will compare these myths with similar ones from other parts of the world. Some concepts about natural magick and metaphysics seem to be universal, regardless of geographical place or time where they originated. These common concepts are where we concentrate the most, trying to get to the bottom and find the fundamental truth inside.
