Welcome to More About Me

You stuck around, great! This is the full view of me in my Cadillac. I use a manual chair around the house and the "Caddy" for getting out.

I've heard that time heals all wounds, but I'm not so sure about that. Instead, I think we become less willing to fight a change that has been forced upon us and therefore grow to accept the new circumstances. Anyway, acceptance is the key to many things in life and definitely makes the difference between existing, and living with a disability. I found that I could achieve little before I made peace with my disability and although I still have days when I want to fight instead of accept life on these terms I believe acceptance is an essential first step to beginning the healing process.

Next, I found a reevaluation of my priorities to be in order. I needed to find exactly what was important to me and what I wanted. Once I made my peace and analyzed everything my life started to fall into place. I threw out the trash and decided to work on the leftovers.

I attended a Vocational Rehabilitation Center and studied computer aided design and drafting. I bought a condo. I'm living independently with some help. I'm attending the local community college studying for a Associates of Applied Science degree in Drafting Technology. I'm driving again, I'm a volunteer tutor to a young man with CP, and have joined our county's commission on disabilities. I'm looking forward to completing school and returning to work. I'm happy to be working toward a goal. I'm not trying to sing my own praises. I just want others who are challenged to realize that anything is possible. It brings to mind one of my favorite quotes, "there is nothing to fear except fear itself" FDR.
