Follow the installation guidlines that came with your wood sove.
Follow the general clearanceses guidelines shown in the picture below.
Fire are usually caused by faulty installation, misuse, and misunderstanding
of how to use one correctly.
-
Purchase a new stove from an experienced, reliable dealer.
-
Although more expensive, plate steel and cast iron stoves last longer than
barrel and sheet metal. The cheaper stoves may burn through.
-
Check stoves for U.L. listings
-
If you purchase a used stove, check for cracks, warps, and similar defects....
also check legs, door seals and draft louvers. The stove should be
air tight except through the air inlets.
-
Check all local fire and building codes. Also check with your insurance
agent, your policy may not cover fires from wood burning stoves.
You may need to obtain special coverage.
-
Brick, stone, slate and cement less than 8 inches thick (20.32 centimeters)
do not offer protection from radiant heat.
-
Place stove on a fire resistive base.
-
Fireplace inserts or stoves in fireplaces will greatly increase chimney
temperatures which, in turn, increase the hazard of igniting the wood beams
surrounding the chimney in the wall.
-
Before using the stove, ask the local fire inspector to exam the installation.
