What is an Algorithm Anyway?

When you use an organized, step-by-step process to reach a particular goal, you are using an algorithm.

In the past, children were only taught one algorithm for each basic mathematic operation (+, -, x, / ). This way was thought to provide the least confusion.

But times have changed. Students are now expected to recognize the correct mathematical interpretation of a problem, estimate a reasonable answer, and know several methods that can be used to arrive at a correct answer.

Thanks to the advent of many new technologies, the methods students have available now include not just traditional algorithms, but also calculator skills.
