Meditation

Since many years I'm experiencing the wonderful effects of meditation in my daily life, so I'll try to explain to you what Meditation is and how to do it.

Meditation is a very ancient treasure of human heritage, it's origins are lost in the beginning of human civilization, in the wonderful culture of Tantra.
Today Meditation is still practiced by many people all over the world.
Thanks to many Spiritual masters, Meditation has been brought in the west and is now available to all. Actually in this difficult days, many people is learning this ancient art for different reasons; some find Meditation a way to escape from the crowd and agitated environment in which they live, some find relief from stress, depression and physical diseases as well. But most of the people are joining this life style for spiritual reasons.

But what is Meditation? Many people think that Meditation is deep thinking, but it is not.
Once we get established in this practice, it is possible to experience a stage in which the mind gets emptied and thoughts are absent.
Thought this stage is not the aim of the practice: once the mind is emptied from all the thoughts, we can fill it with the most blissful experience of the Cosmic Love that pervades everything.

Actually Meditation is the best way to solve many of the problems we find in life, it is the best tool to make our mind stronger and relaxed even in the most difficult situations. If practiced daily, Meditation brings peace, concentration and eventually it leads towards a stage of bliss.

As we give food to our body at list two times every day, so we should provide nourishment for our mind and our Soul as well.

Meditation empties the mind of all the useless thoughts, allowing the consciousness to expand.
Through this practice we can experience that our existence is not limited to the physical or mental sphere, but rather the root of our being is in the spiritual world. As we experience ourselves as spiritual beings, we find that happiness is already inside our heart, and that we can bring it out and share it with others.
Isn't it happiness what we actually want at the end? all the things we do.... isn't it because we want to become happy in the end?
So that happiness is already inside, we just have to feel it and bring it out.

Ok is not that easy in the beginning, but if we use the powerful tool of Meditation, sure we will get it!

As we start to meditate regularly every day, all the fears, tensions, delusions and other stuff stored in our mind that prevent us to be happy, gets removed and a growing sense of joy and bliss starts.
So when we start meditation many of the things  stored in the deeper layers of the mind, come out, so we can face them and finally overcome all the obstacles created in the life by  them.

As there are many spiritual traditions, we can find many different techniques of Meditation. I've tried few of them, and I've found my way with Tantric Meditation, the oldest one. So I'll introduce you to this kind of meditation with a technique that anybody can practice easily.

If you like it and you want know more, it is possible to learn the advanced techniques for free directly from the Tantric monks and nuns of Ananda Marga, the spiritual movement created by my Spiritual Master

The Meditation technique described below, is based on the ancient science of Tantra, and works in three stages:

  1. Withdrawal
  2. Concentration
  3. Mantra repetition

What is a Mantra?

(literally "what frees the mind")

Instead of trying to stop thinking in order to control the mind, we will fore it to think a single thing of our choice, and to this we use a Mantra

The Yogis of the past, found that within our body and mind there is a vibrational activity, and this activity creates sounds. In their deep meditations they listened all this sounds and they cataloged them, they found fifty sounds, and now this sounds are the fifty letters of the Sanscrit alphabet.
In the tantric science of meditation this sounds are used to awaken higher stages of consciousness and they are combined together to create Mantras, special words based on this sounds.

Not every word can be a mantra, so in order to be such it has to have three things:

  1. It must be possible to synchronize it with our breath rhythm.
  2. It must be able to enchant the mind
  3. It must have a meaning on which the meditator can fix his mind

In this technique we'll use the universal Mantra Babanam Kevalam.

Baba means "the most beloved, the Supreme, the Cosmic Love."
Nam means "expression"
Kevalam means "only"

Babanam should be repeated mentally with the in breath.
Kevalam should be repeated with the out breath

So Babanam Kevalam means "Only the expression of the Cosmic love" so when you repeat this Mantra, you should have in your mind the idea that everything around and within you is nothing but the essence of Infinite Cosmic Love. You should feel it.

So now you are ready to practice.
Preparation

  1. Wash your feet, hands and face to calm the body and mind
  2. sit in a cross-legged position or on a chair, but keep your back  as straight as possible (but without strain)
  3. close your hands, your eyes and gently start to bring your mind inside

First phase (withdrawal)

  1. Bring your attention on the rhythm of your breathing, just observe your breath without trying to change it. Let your breath to be spontaneous (go in this way for about 2 minutes)
  2. Now concentrate your attention on the sensations you have in your legs, all the physical sensations. Just feel them. (1.5 minutes)
  3. Forget your legs and bring your attention on the abdominal area, your belly and lower back. Feel all the sensations you have in this part of the body. (1.5 minutes)
  4. Leave the abdomen and bring your mind in the chest area, the upper back and shoulders, again concentrate on the feeling you have in this part of your body: (1.5 min)
  5. Now the head, forget the chest and concentrate on your head. Feel the sensations. (1.5 min)

Second phase (Concentration)

  1. Use your imagination to feel that you are surrounded by a warm and luminous energy, all around you is light.
  2. Imagine that when you breathe in, this energy get absorbed within you
  3. As you breath out the luminous energy brings away all your tensions, fears... anything that disturbs you.
  4. Go on like this for about 2-3 minutes.

Third phase (Mantra repetition)

  1. Now you can start to mentally repeat the mantra
  2. While you breath in repeat "Babanam"
  3. Breathing out repeat "Kevalam"
  4. Fill the entire mind with the sound of the mantra and it's meaning "Everything is love".
  5. Go on in this way as long as possible.

When you feel tired, stop repeating the mantra and gently open your eyes.
If you can keep silence for about 20 minutes it will help you to absorb more deeply the effect of meditation.
