What Is The ARL TriAthlon?

The TriAthlon is a race with 3 events, swimming, biking, and running. We started the triathlon at the Lyman Middle School in 1987. This year will be the 12th consecutive running of the A.R.L. TriAthlon. So far over 599 students and faculty members have raced in the triathlon.

The A.R.L. TriAthlon is not a full length triathlon. It is designed for Middle School aged students. The race starts at the Blanding Public swimming pool by swimming 4 lengths. Next comes the biking which is a 5-mile course followed by a 2-mile run. Students can race as a Team of 3, having a different student do each event, or they can enter as an Individual and do all 3 events by themselves.

Awards are given in 12 different student categories. Each grade will have a boys individual, girls individual, girls team, and boys team category. Students only compete against the other students in their category. Trophies are awarded to each student who wins 1st place and ribbons will be given to each student who takes 2nd or 3rd place in their category.

A School Record Board hangs by the front door of the Middle School. This board displays the fastest time ever run by the 599+ students or faculty members in the A.R.L. TriAthlon over the last 11 years.

Any middle school student can enter and run the triathlon, But if you want to win your category or especially set a New School Record, you need to TRAIN! Every year 4 or 5 School Records are broken. You might be the new Schools Record Holder if you are willing to prepare. Training takes time. You cannot start running a week before the race and expect anything out of it except sore muscles and an upset stomach.

Now is the time to start training. Start out slow so you don't get sore, then increase slowly till you reach your desired speed and distance. Training schedules can be obtained from Mr. Christiansen or you can set up your own schedule, but start now so you'll have a good race.
"The will to win is not nearly as important
as the will to prepare to win."
