INTEREST  SITES

PATRIOTS  CAVES :

Site  at  Cumberland Bay  have  this  name  because   the  42  patriots  that  were  vanished  in  this   island  and  lived  in  those  caves  spending  sorrow  and  madness  after  the  Old  Nation  Battle  and  Disaster  of  Rancagua ,  October   of  1814 ,  previously  it  was  used  as  pirats   home  or  shelter , today  National  Monument.

SANTA  BARBARA  BATTERY  :

It  was  built  in  the  year  1749  by  the  spanish  government , and  it  tried  to   prevent  the  attack  of    corsaries   and  pirats  that   were  stucking  the  coasts  of  America -  Historic  National  Monument   reconstructed  at  1974 ,  it's   beside  the Patriots  caves.

THE  ISLAND   GRAVEYARD :

On the seashore there are graves of some of the crew of the German cruiser "Dresden", sunk in the bay in 1915. It is also the final resting place of Baron Alfredo de Rodt, who established the Island Comunity in 1877, residing there till his death.

El  YUNQUE  SMALL  SQUARE :

Located at the foot of "El Yunque" hill, the higher on the  island being almost 915 mts. high.  Here, the german seaman Hugo Weber, survivor of the german cruiser Dresden, spet 12 year utterly isolated from the world and from the local community, there by becoming know has the "German Robinson".

SELKIRK  LOOKOUT:

So name in honour of Alexander Selkirk, british shipwreoked sailor whose choice  look-out spot it was. From, there due to its height, he had a good view of the surrounding sea on the look-out for some passing ship to take him home. This is a good place to pic-nic.

ENGLISH  HARBOUR:

Is reached after a half hour boat trip and is some 50 meters from the shore: The exploring of this cave takes about three hours. On the hill overlooking the bay are to be found the cannons that defended the island from the British Corsairs, this is the reason for the place being called English Port (Puerto Ingles).

FRENCH   HARBOUR:

SAND   DUNES  BEACH:

Behind the airtrip. One or two days trips are made there, camping out in sleeping bags. Water must be taken as there is none.
There is the only sandy beach on the Island and it is reached after a two and half hour boat trip around islets, cliff and seal breeding grounds, but there are many other places appropiates for to

swimming and to dive around the island.

LOBSTER'S   CAPTURE:

The main activity on the island is lobster fishing; the islanders spend their days attending their lobster traps placed in various spots around the island. Lobster fishing is the mainstay of the island's economy.
