Information Systems

define information vs. data, identify components of information systems, similarities & differences among information systems, information storage and retrieval, responsible use, information economies (vs. production economies), introduction to networked information systems

Information Technologies: Tools & Impacts

types of tools, how to select the right tool for the job, tutorials & training, operating systems & utilities, word processing & desk top publishing, spreadsheets, multimedia & presentation software

Problem Solving Using Information Technology

 

Semester 2

Individuals & Machines

AI, robotics, expert systems, virtual reality & games

Converging Information Technologies

broadcast & non-broadcast media, visual & performing arts, personal communications

Networks and the Internet

network topologies, standards, hardware/ software requirements, vocabulary, ethical issues of the internet

Information Technologies: Tools & Impacts

sound processing, modeling/simulation software, databases, graphics & computer-aided drawing, hypertext

 

Major Requirements—these will be graded initially, and will contribute to the portfolio/project eventually sent to IB.

Grading Philosophy

Grades are calculated on the total point system, so a student can calculate his/her own grade for the course at any time.

I will try to give reminders as key due dates approach, but ultimate responsibility for turning work in on time lies with the student. I will accept late work, with penalty.
