I am currently studying Linguistics at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. As an undergraduate I studied at Cornell College, which did not have a linguistics program. There were two classes under the heading of Languages and Linguistics: Introduction to Linguistics and Language Teaching Methods. Using these two courses, plus many classes in languages (German, Greek, and Latin), anthropology, and psychology, I built my own undergraduate major, which I called Languages and Linguistics. I supplemented this training with a summer of courses at the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) in Grand Forks , ND. The courses I took there were phonetics, syntax and morphology, sociolinguistics, and langauge learning methods. |
The Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas (SSILA) is an organization concerned with Native American langauges, many of which are endangered or extinct. There are many resources on this site.
