What's a parable?

Parable comes from the Greek root word parabole which literally means "to throw beside".


As the Greek root suggests, a parable is basically a story with a deeper meaning "thrown beside" it. A parable is basically an extended simile or analogy. The story usually described everyday events and situations, but used this common occurence to explain a greater truth.

Jesus taught many things while he was here on earth. He gave instruction on living, ministry, and even the future or the nature of heaven. Sometimes He taught truths by way of parables. There were many parables, and while all the stories found here may not fit into the exact category of a parable, we can learn something from them.
