Megumi, age 18, is a student of Beach Cities Symphony flutist Donna Clarke. Among her honors are three trophies from the Southwestern Youth Music Festival which include first place Baroque Category and the highest award given in the Young Flutist Category.

 Megumi was a winner of the 1998 and 1999 Southern California Junior Bach All Branch Woodwind Festival and the 1998 Junior Bach Regional Program. The Noon Concert Auditions resulted in her being presented in recital at the Los Angeles Bach Festival which is held each year at the First Congregational Church.

 During 1999 Megumi was the winner of the Senior Soloist Category of the South Bay Branch VOCE Competition. She also performed in a Master Class with Anne Zentner at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and has been chosen to perform in the Julius Baker Master Class in Connecticut.

 Megumi plans to pursue a career in music.

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Julie started piano when she was five years old. Soon afterwards, she began piano lessons with Mihyang Keel. She won the first prize award in the Southern California Youth Music Competition and first prize in the Cypress College Piano Competition in 1996. In 1997, she won the silver medal from the Southern California Bach Festival and the first prize from the "Open American Music" category at the Southwestern Youth Music Festival. She was the 1998 first prize winner at the Korea Times Los Angeles Piano Competition and at the CAPMT Sonata Competition. The summer of 1999 found Julie performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre with the Musica Sinfonia of Los Angeles.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Fidelina Atsuko Yamaoka

 Flutist Jane Rigler performed with the Beach Cities Symphony as one of the Artists of the Future in 1983. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Music in Orchestral Performance from Northwestern University, and received her Ph.D and Master’s degrees in Theoretical and Experimental Performance Practice from UCSD. Today, she is a thriving professional performer. She has cultivated her personality as a flutist/vocalist by embracing a diversity of musical interests such as Western-European classical and contemporary music, Spanish flamenco, the Japanese Shakuhachi, the Javanese Suling and the yodel songs of the Central African Pygmies. Since 1994 she has collaborated with composer/performer Rafael Liñán, and has performed in Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante, Granada, Darmstadt, Boston, San Diego and Chicago.

 Who knows where our Artists of the Future from this year’s concert will be in a few years?

 Thanks to Dr. Peter Landecker, the Beach Cities Symphony has been part of cyberspace since December, 1998. That’s when Landecker, a violinist with the orchestra for the past twenty-five years, launched our web page, which you can view at www.netword.com/bcso. Information, which is regularly updated, includes our current program, upcoming concerts, the history of the Beach Cities Symphony, a biography of Music Director Barry Brisk, newsletter articles, a map of the concert venue, a roster of orchestra members, advertisers and corporate sponsors, fundraising activities, and, in the near future, a list of Beach Cities Symphony Association members.

Peter Landecker is representative of the multi-faceted musicians who often gravitate to community orchestras. Born in New York City, he graduated from the Bronx High School of Science, earned a B.A. from Columbia College, and received his Ph.D. in Experimental Physics from Cornell University. Currently he is a member of the American Physical Society and a Senior Scientist at Hughes Space and Communications Company in El Segundo, where he specializes in physics instruments that fly on satellites. Recently, for example, he worked on the camera that flew on the Galaxy XI spacecraft and on the Geosynchronous Operational Environment Satellite (GOES). His other professional accomplishments include authoring 74 publications in professional journals, and patenting several devices relating to spacecraft orientation and navigation and to cameras.

 Peter enjoys a variety of pastimes. He is a member of the International Astronomical Union and has been giving astronomical workshops at deBenneville Pines Camp and Conference Center in the San Bernardino Mountains for the past twenty years. An avid land-based and underwater photographer, he is also an active scuba diver who has logged over 1,100 dives in 26 countries. Closer to home, he raises desert tortoises in his back yard.

 Not surprisingly, Peter describes music as "a delightful balance [to] my scientific activities." While he wishes our concerts included more music from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, he nevertheless rises to the challenge of performing a spectrum of orchestral selections. He began playing the violin at age nine and has played in string quartets as well as in symphony ensembles. At one time he also studied piano; his mother, who was his teacher, still teaches music privately and at Saddleback College.

 Beach Cities Symphony Principal Oboist Gerald Fried composed the music for several of the late Stanley Kubrick’s early films, including The Killing, Fear and Desire, Day of the Fight, Killer’s Kiss, and Paths of Glory. With the help of film and camera expert Larry Tunick, Gerald’s partner in the oboe section, scenes from these movies will be projected onto screens in Marsee Auditorium at our May concert while the orchestra plays the accompanying music written for the films. The audience (and orchestra) will share in an experience similar to attending a silent movie during the early part of the twentieth century. You won’t want to miss this unusual event!
