Kelly & Kathie 1998
After many anguishing months of pain, chemotherapy and other vigorous medical treatments, Lt. Kelly Becker of Molalla Oregon, lost her battle for life the morning of September 28, 2000.
Kelly was surrounded by her family and many dear friends at the time she passed away. Kelly's sister Kathie, whom had been with her during all of her treatments and the battle to save Kelly's life was at her side, until the very end. Together in death, just as they had always been together during their lives.
Over 600 people attended Kelly's memorial service, not including the 11 Fire District who also attended. Kelly was given a full honor guard by the State of Oregon, her husband and children received her flag, and her red helmet at the end of the ceremony. We wish to give Molalla Fire our deepest thanks for all of the wonderful things they did for the family, and for the wonderful memorial they gave Kelly.
Kelly and her sister Kathie, had shared a lifetime together, not only were they sisters, but they were best friends, doing almost everything together including fighting fire. Everyone who knew the sisters, knew they shared their lives with each other, and there were no secrets that they kept from each other, except for one. Kathie had been diagnosed with cancer, three weeks before Kelly died. Kathie never told Kelly, she wanted Kelly to leave this life in peace, so the cancer was the one secret she withheld from her sister.
Kathie is not only a Firefighter, but a very knowledgeable medic, she served as the district's EMS Coordinator for many years, before moving into the position of Public Education Officer, and Pathogen Control Coordinator, she had also served many years as a Trauma/Critical Care Nurse.
In 1987, Kathie received recognition from President Ronald Reagan for life saving above and beyond the call of duty. She was presented with the Life Saving Medal of Merit by President Reagan in January 1987. At the time she received the medal, she was the fourth female in history to have ever received one from a President of the United States, needless to say, a very great honor. In 1999 Kathie received from the State of Oregon, the Community Service Medal for Public Education, again a great honor. Her Public Education website is the only one to date in Oregon to be recognized as an online Education source. Kathie's Gun Safety Program is now endorsed by 57 different Law Enforcement agencies across the United States. Kathie is also a published author, she is also well known within the Fire Service locally for the movies she produces. Kathie is a multitalented person.
Kathie has faithfully served her community and Fire District for over 12 years, taking away many hours with her family and 5 children in order to help serve the community she loved. Although discarded by Clackamas County Fire Distrist, in August 2000, Kathie continues to serve a larger community now through her work. The ongoing Education of people online, through out, the entire world.
As of October 2001, Kathie is still alive, and trying to make it through treatment hoping to gain more time with her five children, and the three children her sister left behind. Your prayers, for the Firefighter's around the world, whom have lost their lives to cancer, and their Family's would be much appreciated. Along with prayers, for those whom were lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 bombing of the WTC in New York. At this time, Kathie and the rest of Lt. Becker's family would like to thank all of the departments locally and world wide, whom helped with contributions to help fight to save Kelly's life. Although we lost the battle to save Kelly, your contributions helped to buy her time with her family, and children that she would not have had without treatment. We, her family, thank you with all of our hearts, we can never repay or thank you enough for your help and support.

Prior to Kelly being promoted lieutenant, she was fighting in the trenches with the rest of the firefighters. She is a top responder in the district, making the majority of 911 calls that occur in the district. Chief Misso states, that is an enormous amount for any firefighter, let alone a mother of three children.
Chief Misso and the firefighters of Molalla miss Becker's presence and hope for her quick recovery.
Kelly is one of the core people that just helps to get things done. She would work on equipment, clean the station, fight fire, run medical calls, anything to help. She is deeply involved in all aspects of the station.
Becker is even involved in the fire district's fire prevention program. She works the puppet shows at local schools during Fire Prevention Week yearly, getting the message of prevention out to thousands of children. Kelly is the voice of "Fire Pup" the districts mascot, and has been for 9 years now.
