A Sermon by Reverend Hollis Ray Mathis

reetings, holy children of God, in the wonderful name of our lord and saviour Jesus, the Christ. The sermon subject for today is:

Baptist Doctrine Concerning Baptism

Let me read to you what Baptist believe concerning baptism; reading from Baptist creed adopted by the southern Baptist on May 6, l963. Concerning their doctrine on the subject of baptism. Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer's faith in a crucified, buried, and risen saviour, the believer's death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to his faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Being a church ordinance, it is prerequisite to the privileges of church member ship and to the Lord's supper. Beloved of God, the way that is worded a person may think that the men in author in the Baptist denomination, those that make discussions concerning doctrine, believe that baptism is a necessity to salvation. But not so: the men in authority believe that "faith plus nothing equals salvation ". Men in authority in the Baptist denomination believe that baptism is a symbolic act. When in reality it is the only way that I know of that men, women, and children are translated out of the world, and into the body of Christ. Galatians 3:27 for as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Holy children, you may wonder why it is so important for a child of God to be baptized into the body of Christ. It is in the body of Christ that we, the children of God, are reconciled unto God the father. 2 Corinthians 5:l9 to wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them: and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Saints of God, it is in Christ, in the body of Christ that we become a new creature. 11 Corinthians 5:l7 therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold all things are become new. Beloved of God it is in the body of Christ that we shall receive eternal life. L john 5:ll and this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his son. Brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ, when Baptist men preach that you are saved by faith alone they will say something like this "the thief that Jesus took to paradise with him was not baptized." But saints of God there is no place in the bible that says that the thief that Jesus took to paradise with him was not baptized. Jesus Christ was on the cross of Calvary, and he was baptized. And, I believe that the thief that found grace in the eyes of Christ was baptized also, for except a man be born of water, baptized, and of the spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. St.John 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, how can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born. 5. Jesus answered, verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.6.that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of spirit is spirit.
