A Sermon by Reverend Hollis Ray Mathis

reetings, holy children of God, in the wonderful name of our lord and saviour Jesus, the Christ. The sermon subject for today is:

Repentance

If you are a new convert to the Christian religion, you may not be acquainted with what repentance actually is. Repentance is defined as, "turning from sin, and being sorry for, having regret for, the sins you have committed in the past. There are sins that a man can repent of, and there are sins a person cannot repent of. Let me give you and example of what I mean. If a man sins in ignorance he can turn from that sin, be sorry for that transgression, confess that wickedness, and rely upon this scripture for forgiveness.

1 john 1:9 if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

But children of God, no system of law could be effective, if it allowed ignorance to be a valid defense. For, when men where brought before a judge for some transgression of the law, they would simply say, that they were not aware that the law existed; therefore, when a law is passed in congress, all men are presumed to know every part of it. If a man sins in ignorance he can be forgiven of that sin. But, we as children of God, are commanded to study.

11 timothy 3:15 study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Come into this knowledge children of God, God is grooming us to spend eternity with him. Many men, and women, are called to work in the harvest, but few shall be chosen to spend eternity with Christ. And, it is Jesus Christ that I believe will do the choosing. Therefore, as you go about your daily chores, let the words that you speak, and deeds that you do, be for a credit to you when you stand before Jesus Christ. For we all have an appointment with him. To stand before him, and give an account of the deeds done in this tabernacle of flesh. In these verse of scripture Jesus is speaking, and he says

St. Matthew 12:35 a good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things ; and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36. But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Holy children if a man commits a sin in ignorance, he can repent of that sin, and confess the sin unto God, and be forgiven of the sin, but if a man sins presumeously, with malice a forethought, he shall be in serious trouble with the lord God. The law of Moses' gives a good example of what I am talking about. If a man sinned in ignorance, he could bring a she goat to the priest, and

The priest could offer the goat up as a sacrifice unto God, and the sin be forgiven. But if he sin presumously, there was no sacrifice that could be offered up for that sin.

Numbers 15:27 and if any soul sin through ignorance, then he shall bring a she goat of the first year for a sin offering.28. And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly, when he sinneth by ignorance before the lord, to make an atonement for him ; and it shall be forgiven him. 29.ye shall have one law for him that sinneth through ignorance, both for him that is born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth.among them. 30. But the soul that doeth ought presumptously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the lord;and that soul shall be cut off from among his people 31. Because he hath despised he word of the lord, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off, his iniquity shall be upon him. Because he hath despised the word of the lord, and hath broken his commandment.

Beloved of God, a similar law has been brought over into the new testament. If a man sins wilfully after he has come into the knowledge of the truth, there is no more sacrifice for sin. Why? Because if he sins wilfully after he has come into the knowledge of the truth, he trods under foot the son of God, he counts the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified, and unholy thing, and he does despite unto the spirit of grace.

Hebrews 10:26 for if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins. 27. But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation which shall devour the adversaries. 28. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses; 29. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the lord. And again, the lord shall judge his people. 31. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Holy children, I know the false prophets have told you that if you sin, all you have to do is confess that sin, and it will be forgiven, but that is a lie. Adam transgressed God's commandment, one commandment, and death reigned upon all mankind from Adam unto Moses'. When Moses was born God chose him a people, Israel, and allowed them to put off the spiritual death, with the ritual of the scapegoat. But, from the time that Adam eats of the tree of knowledge of good, and evil. Until Christ hang on Calvary's cross the spiritual death reigned on the gentile. We, as gentiles were without hope of eternal life. Come into this knowledge children of God. To the good, God is very good, but to the wicked God is sever. Let me at this time warn you of some of the sins that cannot be repented of. If a man is circumcised before he is baptized, the water of his baptism will wash away that sin. But, if he circumcises himself with the intent to keep the law of Moses' after he has been baptized into Christ. He will fall from grace, and Christ will profit him nothing. The apostle Paul was inspired of God to record these words.

Galatians 5:1 stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. 2. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing for I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a. 3. Debtor to do the whole law. 4. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. 5. For we through the spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 6. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

Let me make this very clear children of God, once you have been baptized into Christ, and have received the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the holy ghost; do not be circumcised with the intent to keep the law of Moses' for if you do, you will fall from grace, and Christ will profit you nothing. Another sin that a person cannot repent of is, falling away from the church, withdrawing your support, and renouncing your faith. For if you commit this sin after that you have come into the knowledge of the truth, after that you have received the holy ghost, then there is no repenting of this sin; the sin will remain. Let me read to you the scriptures concerning this sin.

Hebrews 6:1 therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God. 2. Of the doctrine of baptisms, and laying on of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3. And this will we do, if God permit. 4. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the holy ghost. 5. And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come. 6. If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Holy children, we as children of God, walk through this present world, fearing and trembling, not that we fear what man can do to us; but we fear God. For we know that to the good; God is very good. But, to the wicked, we know that God is sever. Man can only kill the body, but God can kill the body, and cast the soul into hell. In this verse of scripture Jesus is speaking, and he says,

St. Matthew 10:28 and fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Romans 11:22 behold therefore the goodness and severity of God; on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness, otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

Saints of God, there is another mortal sin that I would like to warn you of, which is probably the most deadly of all sins. If it is not the most deadly, at least it is listed among the top. And that is swearing. If you are not familiar with what swearing actually is, let me explain. Swearing is when you make a solemn declaration, and strengthen that declaration, by mentioning something, or someone sacred. For example when a person goes into court to give testimony. There will be a person there with a bible in his hand, and will ask you to swear that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and then mention someone sacred. Not only does the world want you to swear when you go into court, but when you buy real estate, when you buy a car, or when you try to obtain a loan. But, with each temptation God will make an escape. We as Christians are allowed to affirm. That means that you will make a solemn declaration, under penalty of perjury, without swearing. Most of the time when you go to make a business transaction, the forms are already typed having you to swear, but it is legal to strike through the word swear, and write in affirm; a.f.f.i.r.m, and initial the change. But child of God, if you swear, you will most likely be condemned when you stand before God. Listen as I read from the epistle of James.

James 5:12 but above all things my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath; but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.

Think on this brethren, is it possible for a person to be saved without repenting? Is it possible for a person to be saved, for a person to inherit eternal life, an immortal body, and a city called new Jerusalem, to be heir, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ in the kingdom of God, and not repent? No it is not. I base my opinion on these verses of scripture.

St. Luke 13:1 there were present at that season some that told him of the galilaens, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2. And Jesus answering said unto them, suppose ye that these galilaeans were sinners above all the galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3. I tell you, nay; but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 4. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5. I tell you, nay; but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Saints of God, it is my belief, that a man cannot come to repentance on his own.

It is God that calls his children to repentance. God calls his children, justifies them, glorifies them, gives them the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the holy ghost. It is my belief that in creation, God elected, selected, hand picked us to be his very own. Predestinated us to be adopted into his family, that we might be sons, and daughters in the kingdom of God. There are multitudes of men that do not believe in predestination, and I am inclined to believe that they are not predestinated. But come into this knowledge saints of God. All, let me repeat, all that God foreknew, he did predestinate.

Romans 8:28 and we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called; and whom he called, them he also justified; and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 31. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32. He that spared not his own son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

Saints of God, as we walk through this present world, it is similar to walking through a minefield. If you do certain things, it is like steping on a mine, you are blown up. But if you know were the mines are; the possibility of being blown up are remote. That is why I am preaching to you concerning the sins that cannot be repented of. Let me warn you of another sin that cannot be repented of, and that is the blaspheme against the holy ghost. If a person speaks one word against the holy ghost, it shall not be forgiven in this world, neither in the world to come.
