A Sermon by Reverend Hollis Ray Mathis

reetings, holy children of God, in the wonderful name of our lord and saviour Jesus, the Christ. The sermon subject for today is:

The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments were Laws dealing with the fundamental obligations of religion and morality, and in their time, embodying the revealed expression of the Creator's will in relation to man's whole duty to God. The law of Moses for salvation, was valid from the time of Moses until John the Baptist come preaching in the wilderness. But when John the Baptist came preaching in the wildness the Law of Moses was finished, made void, for salvation. Luke 16:16The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. Let me give you an example. Jesus Christ commands a man to transgress the Law that God gave to Moses, the “Sabbath Day Laws” without sin. John 5:5And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? 7The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. 8Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. 9And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. 10The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. Why was the Law given to Moses? The Law and the Prophets were our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. Galatians: 3:23But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.26For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. If a man makes two wills, and then dies it is only the Last Will and Testament that is valid. Since the death of Christ Jesus on Calvary’s Cross the New Testament is valid, the Old Testament is history, and prophecy. The Ten Commandments are found twice recorded in the Pentateuch, in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5, The Law that God gave to Moses was for the nation of Isreal’s salvation, it was not intended for the salvation of the Gentiles. Before Christ came into the world, and offered himself up to God to make an atonement for our sins, we as Gentiles were without hope of eternal life. Ephesians 2:11Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; 12That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 13But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;15Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; Here are the Ten Commandments, that God gave to Moses, as recorded in the King James Translation. Exodus 20:1And God spake all these words, saying,2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 8Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:10But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. 12Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. 13Thou shalt not kill. 14Thou shalt not commit adultery. 15Thou shalt not steal. 16Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. Are the Ten Commandments good? Yes, they are good. Romans 7:13Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. The nation of Israel still shape their lives according to the Law of Moses trying to be justified by works alone. The apostle Paul was inspired of God to record these words about the Law of Faith. Rom:10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. 2For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. 5For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. 6But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; The whole law that God gave to Moses’ is known as the Law of Sin and Death. Why? because the Law that God gave to Moses had to be kept to the Letter. 2 Cor. 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. And also, James2:10For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. Under the Law of the Spirit of Life which is in Christ Jesus we are not required to keep the Law to the letter. Under the Law of Moses if a person transgressed the law the pentalties were sever. If a person did any work at all; they would put their life in jeopardy. Let me give you an example. Numbers 15:32And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day. 33And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. 34And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him. 35And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp. 36And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses. Law is an exact science, if you are one dollar short, or one day late on a contract the contract is broken. If you drive one mile an hour over the speed limit, you have broken the speed limit and subject to punishment. There are always men that will try to drag you back under the Law of Moses by preaching tithing. All Israel went under the curse, or a sentense of condemnation, because of the tithing laws. If a man was short one ear of corn or produce, one of any livestock, or one penny short he had broken the tithing law. Malachi 3:8Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Most of the Ten Commandments were brought over into the New Testament Matthew 19:18He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, But the Sabbath Laws, and the Tithing Laws were not brought over into the New Testament. The Sabbath day Law was a shadow that to come. Colossians 2:16Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. The Tithing Law was a tax placed upon the tribes of Israel for the support of the Levitical tribe. In the New Testament we, the children of God have been adopted into the family of God, and Kings do not tax their own children. Matthew 17:24And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? 25He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? 26Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. There two systems of Laws whereby men shall be judged on Judgment Day one is the Law of Moses, and the other is the Law of the spirit of Life which is in Christ Jesus. Rom. 8:1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: By the Law of Moses no flesh shall be justified. Rom. 3:20Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;26To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. From the time that Adam transgressed the commandment of God, until Christ Jesus hang on Calvary’s Cross we, as Gentiles, were without hope of eternal life. Ephesians 2:11Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;12That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 13But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;15Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; The first Gentiles to receive the Holy Ghost (Titus 3:5Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;) was the Gentiles that received the Holy Ghost at Cornelius’s home. Acts 10:44While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.45And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? Where there many saved under the Law that God gave to Moses’? No, only a few. The word few is defined as three or more. Isaiah 24:5The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. 6Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. The carnal mind, the fleshly mind of sense, and reason, without the Holy Ghost is not subject to the Laws of God, and neither in deed can be. When the Holy Ghost comes to dwell within the inward man the soul then a person can keep God’s commandments. For it is the Holy Ghost that gives us the power to live the Christian life. 1John 3:8He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
