EDITORIAL ON MARILYN MANSON

written in November of 1996

In recent experiences of mine, I have heard a lot of negative responses about the band Marilyn Manson, by said "fans". Many of whom, recited a lot of facts and rumors that plainly, I haven't found any truth to. And trust me, I have read and heard a lot about the band, from sources I feel are more reliable then 'that guy in math'. It seems to me that most people are just seeing them as a bunch of pederic-Satanic- freakish-jokes. But still, without hesitation those same people will buy their albums. To me, people who believe and spread every inept rumor they hear about the band, are merely just adding to their own naiveness and gullibility. Any one nothing, can put a homepage on the net and write a bunch of lies, and/or spread a bunch of mindless inane rumors.

If you're a fan of the band you should accept that they are different. Chances are they don't act like you or I do. At first whenever I'd see a photo of or read an interview with Marilyn I was taken more aback each time. And I admit, sometimes what they say can be hard to comprehend; or for some to even stomach. But maybe every time I learn something about them, it leaves me more open-minded and more willing to accept differences. And this enables me to respect the artists more.

I can't even begin to understand how people can just say "Yeah I like the music; but not them, their freaks!" O.K., I admit that in definition they're freaks. They are abnormal individuals in almost every way. But isn't that what you like about them? Isn't that why you listen? It was for me, at least at first. Ask yourself, if Manson and his band were, clean-cut young men, would you like them? If they dressed in Gap clothes and wore Nike caps would you listen? Quite frankly, if saw a band that looked like Hootie and the Blowfish, but sounded like Marylyn Manson, I'd be scared. Their individuality is what makes them popular. It's the bands image that made their music first appealing to me. Was it not for you?

And I am not saying that I think, to like Marilyn Manson you have to be like him. I don't think to enjoy the music and respect the artists means you have to necessarily be Goth. Hell, I'm not. You could still be the preppy dressed individual I was talking about..., meaning, you could still be "normal" and like the band. But in my opinion you should still have some respect for the artists.

Having respect for them doesn't mean you have to endorse or imitate everything that they do. And in retrospect I think whenever someone does become a carbon copy of Marilyn it takes a shred of his individuality away and in a way is being disrespectful. But fuck! If you want to dress like them, dress like them! If you find Satanism interesting, read about it! But you don't have to be like them if you don't want to. And you don't have to practice what they do either.

Just being a fan of the band doesn't mean you have to worship Satan. But maybe it does mean, you could be a little open-minded about questioning the existence of God. Since that is something the band is trying to get to you through lyrics. And being a fan doesn't mean you have to support 100%, their sexual preferences. But you should at the least respect their preferences, after all it is their music you're listening to. Although if you don't have respect for that; and you 're some homophobic twit, I really don't think their music was intended for you.

And for those who still just have zero interest in the actual band, what are you getting out of the music anyway? If you have no knowledge of the bands messages or beliefs, what are you getting out of the lyrical content? You know they really aren't trying to send you messages like kill your parents. They do however try to preach you should believe in yourself and stop worrying about trying to fit in with what is considered beautiful and politically correct. And if you're not getting that maybe you should listen harder. According to Marilyn the band was set up to speak to those who understand them, and to scare those who don't. So maybe that's something to think about for those who just don't get it.

And finally to you people who don't understand the band or the music at all do everyone a favor and just........listen to Hootie instead.
