The Woodguy's Golf Page

Welcome to the Woodguy's Golf page. I started playing golf again in in the late summer of 1996. I had played golf many years ago when I had to bicycle to the course, but gave it up. Now, in my mid-40s, I've learned to love the game.

I've just started breaking 100 and my new goal is to break 95. I play on local courses on the Colorado front range, but I've been lucky enough to play some other courses as well in the Southwest and on the east coast. Some day I hope to play golf in Ireland.

The Clubs in My Bag

Irons I play Titleist DCI oversize irons (3-9) with regular flex graphite shafts. I really like these irons, but I wish I had firm-flex shafts instead of the regular. Perhaps I'll get them reshafted one of these days.
Wedges I use either one or two wedges depending on the course I happen to be playing that day. My main wedge is a Cleveland 56o 588 sand wedge. I use this club a lot and I love it. The wedge that is sometimes in my bag is a Cleveland 60o 588 loft wedge. When my 7-wood is in my bag, the loft wedge is in the truck. There is a course I play that has mostly elevated greens with mounds all around. On this course I use the loft wedge around the green.
Driver I play titanium Callaway's Great Big Bertha with an 8.5o loft and a firm-flex graphite shaft. It took a bit of practice to get used to this club, but now I love it. I went for the 8.5 degree loft because we often play in the wind here in Colorado. I've launched some great shots with this wood and I can't imagine trading it anytime soon for another.
Woods I play Callaway's Big Bertha 3, 5, and 7 (Heavenwood) fairway woods with regular-flex graphite shafts. I really like the performance of these woods, especially the 5 and 7 out of the rough. Again, like with my irons, I wish the shafts were a bit stiffer. When my loft wedge is in the bag, the 7 wood is in the truck.
Putter My flat stick is an old Ping Anser (no, not a Scottsdale, but almost that old) that was given to me by my brother. I love it! I have lots of confidence in it and I've been able to drain some nice ones now and again.
My Bag I carry a Ping Hoofer bag with the 2 carry straps. I like this bag as it's easy to carry, light, and has enough pockets for the junk I carry (including water). Yes, I walk the course. I don't car much for carts and try not to use them.
