Who said what about golf (and other things)

I have a collection of ninetythree books on golf, covering all aspects of the game and comment about it, also books of general quotations. I would like to share some of the contents with you by way of picking quotes you may find interesting.

Bobby Jones in his book Golf is My Game said Considered objectively, it is quite obviously a very simple matter to propel a ball with a stick across some specially prepared ground and into a hole which is of sufficient size to accomodate it by a good margin. Simple that is, provided there is no limit upon the time or the number of strokes required.

Tommy Armour said Play the shot you've got the greatest chance of playing well and play the shot that makes the next shot easy. It is not solely the capacity to make great shots that makes champions, but the essential quality of making very few bad shots.

Peter Allis said If you hit it with your belly button you will shove it right.

Sam Snead said Keep close count of your nickels and dimes, stay away from whiskey, and never concede a putt.

Barry Briggs said Its only a game.

Harvey Penick said The woods are full of long drivers.

Jack Nicklaus said Anytime a golfer hits a ball perfectly straight with a big club it is, in my view, a fluke.

Henry Cotton said It is the control of the tension of the grip in the fingers which counts. This is the golf secret if there is one.

Tommy Armour said How well you play depends on how well you control that left hand of yours.

Lee Trevino said Who can say I have a bad swing? The only thing that matters in golf is the score you put on the board. You don't have to look pretty out there, you have to win. Look at my record and tell me who has a better swing than mine.

Archie Compston said Next to sunburn, a visit to the dentist, or a wasp sting on the privates, nothing gives a man more masochistic satisfaction than a round of golf.

Jack Burrell said My clubs are well used, but unfortunately not used well!

Anthony Burgess said Laugh and the world laughs with you; snore and you sleep alone.

Ogden Nash said The only people who should really sin are the people who can sin with a grin.

George Orwell said Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence; in other words it is war minus the shooting.

Stephen Potter (Title of his book) Gamesmanship or The Art of Winning Games Without Actually Cheating.

Groucho Marks said No, Groucho is not my real name. I'm breaking it in for a friend.

Mark Twain (His definition of a classic of literature) Something everybody wants to have read, and nobody wants to read.

Gary Player often said, The harder I practice the luckier I get.

Bob Hope said If you watch a game, it's fun. If you play it, it's recreation. If you work at it it's golf.

Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927), British author, said It is always the best policy to speak the truth, unless of course you are an exceptionally good liar.
