Mountain Brook Golf Club Hole #1
A view of the first fairway from the tee.
The first hole is a gentle dogleg to the left. Upon reaching the first tee, the golfer will notice out of bounds line both sides. Two large trees wait at the corner of the dog leg, inviting the longer hitter to risk carrying the dogleg. For most players, the fairway bunker waiting on the left is definitely in play, while only the longest of players will reach the second fairway bunker on the right.
Despite its gentle 390 yards, a survey of over 500 rounds of golfers ranging from all skill levels found that the first hole’s score versus par was the highest on the course. The narrow green will hold most balls hit to its left side, but approaches that are too aggressive for right pin placements risk skipping through the green and into a treacherous back bunker.
The first hole is certainly a birdie opportunity, but many ‘other’ scores await those whose minds may not be fully into their round when they begin.
