The Cure: Don't Expect Amenities
On ten years old, the cure arrives in Brazil. It cannot be the redemption for the Brazilian economy evils, nor the
final solution for the hunger in the northeast of the country... the way is to attend the english group led by Robert
Smith. Use black clothes if you want and say that are on mourning. Mad Bob won't annoyance, even being a
person of rude words frequently. After all, since appeared with his school friends in the Sussex villa, trying to
dominate the world with a new rock and saying at the same time that was 'an absurd to record discs', Smith
always marked presence. For who imagines that The Cure is a thing of the last summer, it is good to go attentive
to Gigantinho. The newest worshipers of the gold hits as "In Between Days" or "Lovecats", can get scared. But
goes any way. They cannot be the best ones, but certainly they are the most style ones of the eighties.
Actually it is still not known how Bob Smith will arrive for here. Last year, without a new disc, Robert Smith took
advantage to change the visual. He cut the old and beautiful dismantled hair. Perhaps nor uses the ridiculous
red lipstick and the delineated black eyes anymore, according to the images that the photos transmit us. In the
stage, certainly, the attitude of the group should not have been changed. For what was watched in the videos
they are absolutely egyptians, avoiding a closer relationship with the public. Don't wait of Robert Smith and his
friends things such as: "Everybody sing along" or a "Thank you very much" full of accents. At least it has been
like this since 1979 when The Cure recorded the first disc for Fiction, Three Imaginary Boys.
At that time of Three Imaginary Boys, the group was a trio and Robert already had the habit of doing debauched
declarations or even surrealist. Since has took advantage of Albert Camus to write "Killing An Arab", first Cure
success, Robert has not been embarrassed by anything. Nor continuing live after discovering, in the day in that
completed 25 years old, that still breathed for the morning, since "I was convinced that would be dead to the 25
years old, if not for the another people's hand, for myself. It was a romantic idea but I maintained it for so much
time that came true. I even knew the date, February 14. I always had the same dream: I was dropping on a
window and could feel the glasses entering in my body". Stranger?
More strange is also the sound of the violin played by Smith in a stage flooded by blue lights during the
presentation of the magnificent "The Caterpillar", while Porl Thompson maintains the harmonies in an
acoustic guitar. The Cure shows don't last less than an hour and a half. The visual is deprived. Usually,
black clothes. Smith uses blue tshirts underneath of a dark coat and prosaic tennis. The band still has more
people besides him. The mentioned Porl Thompson is one of the followerses squires. Multi instrumentalist,
plastic artist, Thompson are with Cure since its beginning. In the stage he maintains the Bob insanities
making a second guitar, besides playing parts of keyboards and saxophones plus acoustic guitars.
The current drummer is Boris Willians. He entered for the recording of Head On The Door, the disc that placed
the band in the great american market. Another Cure founder that will also be at the stage of Gigantinho on this
weekend is Laurence Tolhurst. Robert's friend childhood. Lol was the first drummer of the group. Then it
seems that he was nauseous of beating drums and decided to play keyboards. The old friend Bob didn't fight,
he allowed. That change of instruments happened at that time of The Top, the band psychedelic disc, in 83.
At that time, the drums were given to the super competent Andy Anderson.
Also back to The Cure is the bassist Simon Gallup. He entered for the group at that time of Seventeen Seconds,
second Cure disc, in 1980, and left in 1982. He came back now with The Head On The Door. Gallup became
also well-known for his longer and stretched hair than the Robert one, which doesn't want to do gender as
'sex symbol'. Actually, he nor wanted to make success, just to die young. He didn't get. Then he began to
spread dreams and deliriums during the interviews that does. Oh yes, as it was already spoken about, Smith
adores football as a english that he is. He lives in an all white and earthy apartment, at London. none special
according to Robert. Probably when he returns for there, won't remember that was in a city called Porto Alegre.
At the same time, Bob swears that all this is not superstar chat. On the contrary. He says that prefers to be far
of that kind of history, as circulating everywhere in company of other rock names. But debauches and
sarcasms are changed at the stage by a cold posture. None of Cure member jump during the shows. They
almost nor move. In fact, Smith pulls up unbearable noise of his guitar while his face stay as impassive as if
he was playing a "berceuse" on the piano. Finally, Smith placed all his failures in the success charts. His
deliriums, his nonsenses, his loves, his drugs, everything exist in the discs impregnated by the cure.
All this will be on the stage of Gigantinho for two nights. Certainly the public will vibrate with "In Between Days".
The most ardent and old fans will adore the decibels in excess of "Give Me It". Perhaps he plays a pop
"Let's Go To Bed" if he is very tempered. The basic is due to The Head On The Door repertoire, such things
as "Close To Me" or "The Blood" flamencas sonorities. If they play "Few Hours After This", I respect, it is pretty.
But certainly somebody will let to escape a yawn if Smith challenges the lamentable "Walling Wall", playing his
flute that is not always very tuned.
