SO YOU WANT A HOMEPAGE, HUH?

It's not as tough as you might think. You need to know a few things though. How to build the page. Where to store the page so the world can find it. And how to update the page as your fascinating life unfolds.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

Some of you may be fortunate enough to be provided with storage space on your server's computer. Some of you may not. Some of you just plain don't know, right?

Well, don't worry about it. The good folks at Geocities have been kind enough to offer free homepage storage and you can find out about it by going here .

They offer not only the storage facility, but builtin software for editing your pages. It's pretty neat to just go to the Geocities site, stick in your password, and get your page's coding up to make changes with no uploading or downloading. In literally seconds you've updated your page.

A further bonus is the free Email that's included.

HOW DO YOU BUILD IT?

So now you know where to put your page. The problem is, you don't have a page to put.

You write the page just like you would any letter or brochure except that you have to add HTML tags to make it look right in the browser. Just like any word processor program has it's own formatting so does HTML. The nice thing is that HTML tags (formatting code) sits right up front for you to see just like "reveal codes" in Wordperfect, for instance. In fact, if you know the tags well enough, you can create a page with Windows wordpad or any other simple text editor. But it's easier with a proper HTML editor because it has lots of shortcuts built in. Geocities will help you out tremendously but often you will want to work offline to save hour usage if you are on a limited time program with your server.

That takes software and here are the places you go for it. They are always excellent sources for new and old software. Tucows and Stroud's.

Both offer a well-organised environment for you to find out about new software offerings with download info and critiques. Bookmark these sites for future reference.
