How I became a volunteer fireman.

I has always had a dream of becoming a fireman when I was older. I always thought that you had to be 18 years old to join a fire department, even if it was volunteer. Then one day after talking to a friend of mine and finding out that there was a thing called a cadet program. The cadet program on my local fire department allowed teenagers who were not 18 yet to find out alittle about the fire department. It also gave them a stepping stone when they became 18. As I found out you took classes and trained just like the other memebers of the fire department. I am getting ahead of myself here. Let me tell you alittle history of me and my fire department.

It was in the spring of 1991 and I was finally able to talk my father into taking me to the local fire department. It was less then a month later and I was in the cadet program of the Flatwoods Fire Departmen. I took all the classes and trained as much as possible. Then the day came that I turned 18. It was the summer of 1994. That is when I felt that I got my true chance to help my community.

I have not been on many structure fires since becoming a member of the fire department due to the great fire prevention program my department has set up. We have not had many. Even though we have not had many structure fires we have still had a few. Presently I have only been on five working structure fires. I don't remember the last four as well as I remember the first one I ever went on.

My first structure fire I ever went into was in the dead of winter. It was only 13 degrees outside and about a foot of snow on the ground. It was an experience that I will never forget. Structure fires are not the only thing we do on the fire department. We also first respond for the ambulance if they are tied up or need lifting assistance. We also do rescues and do public services.

Even though the Flatwoods Fire Department does alot of activities in the community, we are completly volunteer. If you would like to know more about the Flatwoods Fire Department that I belonged to, then just goto my links page and check them out.
