The purpose of the Brunswick Junior Fire Department is to provide interested young men/women (ages 14-18) with an opportunity *** to explore the firefighting and emergency medical professions. It is also to provide the town of Brunswick with a trained and able group to render fire protection within the rules and regulations set in the SOPs.
Stairway To Heaven Junior Firefighters are required to pass written tests on the equipment on each Aparattus before riding it to Fire calls. At age 16 Junior Firefighters may take the Maine Emergency Medical Technician (Basic) course and ride the two Advanced Life Support Rescues also housed in the Brunswick Fire Department. At age 18 Junior Firefighters may apply for a position in the Part-time Call Fire Department. The Junior Fire Department has an advisor, FF/EMT-I Jeff Emerson, a career Firefighter in Brunswick. Firefighter Emerson oversees the trainings and operations of the Junior Fire Department, including the hiring, testing, and training of all Junior Firefighters. The Brunswick Fire Department The Brunswick Fire Department is divided into three 24 hour shifts, Crew 1, Crew 2, and Crew 3 (for personnel listing see The BKFD Page) Each Junior Firefighter is assigned to one of these Crews, which are on a 24-on, 48-off rotation. In addition to the Full-Time force, there is a Call Department and some part-time, consisting of Chief Gary Howard, Deputy Chief Clark Labbe, Dispatcher Donna Dionne, and Lieutenant Scott Higgins, the officer mainly responsible for school programs. If you live in the town of Brunswick and are intersted in this program, stop into the Fire Station on Town Hall Place. If you do not live in Brunswick, but like this idea, go to your local fire department and inquire about the Junior Firefighter / Explorer program. Who knows, you may start something.
