CAREER AIM

Having a strong background in audio, hi-fi and acoustics, I aim to spend my career working in loudspeakers, particularly within the hi-fi arena. I want to work within a loudspeaker design and R&D team, later progressing into management.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

University of Salford 1995 - 1999
BEng (Hons) in Electroacoustics (2-1)
The course includes a year in industry which I spent with Philips in the Netherlands. I scored firsts in the transducer design module (which included a group loudspeaker design project) and almost all electronics modules. A great deal of computing was involved throughout the course and I believe I am more than competent in using a windows PC.

Rainham Mark Grammar School 1988-1995
A-Levels: Physics (A), Chemistry (A), General Studies (A), Maths with Mechanics (C).
GCSE’s: eleven - A*(star) in Electronics, 8 A’s including Maths and English, 2 B’s.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

New Transducers Limited (NXT), Huntingdon August 1999 onwards
I joined the fledgling flat panel loudspeaker company almost directly from university. I have worked my way through the company from a graduate engineer to now being in control of my own projects. I have strong design background covering the whole scope of NXT technology and as such my daily work involves acoustic measurement, computer simulation, and panel design and construction. As part of the Venture Sales group I gained training and experience in AutoCAD, and I have always been willing to travel as and when the job required.

Philips Research Labs, Eindhoven, the Netherlands Sept 1997 - June 1998
For 9½ months I worked as part of the Sound Reproduction Improvement cluster, part of the DSP group at the Philips Natlab. Within a team I performed and organised various acoustic tasks including audiometry, loudspeaker measurement, listening tests, and demonstrations. I devised, organised and ran an experiment to measure the threshold of feeling due to airborne sound. I worked with computers on a daily basis, and gained some experience of Unix. Working with non-native english speakers greatly strengthened my communication skills, and living in a foreign country increased my independence.

KEF Audio (UK) Ltd June - August 1996
During the vacation between my first and second year I worked as an assistant to Mr Richard Hunter, performing loudspeaker measurement, testing and construction. I gained an insight into how a hi-fi loudspeaker manufacturer operates, and it was here I learnt to use the MLSSA system plus started to become a trained listener.

RELEVANT SKILLS AND INTERESTS

I enjoy spending time devising electronic projects and designing and building loudspeakers. I have built up a reasonable hi-fi and home cinema system, which I upgrade all the time; currently I use conventional two way bass-reflex front speakers designed by myself, built with Audax drive units (upgraded with new tweeters and a new crossover last year). The most recent development is an "ultimate" subwoofer. I greatly enjoy listening to music; I have been collecting music for several years, encompassing many artists and styles, and I have built up a substantial collection on both CD and vinyl.

I also spent much time working on my PC. I have upgraded my own machines several times and built computers from scratch, consequentially configuring PC's and fixing problems has become almost second nature. I am conversant with Dos, Windows, many graphics packages, AutoCAD and Microsoft Office, plus I run and maintain several websites. I am a keen user of the internet, and I maintain a homepage at http://www.geocities.com/wickmesh/.

OTHER INTERESTS

I am team captain for and driver of the Robot Wars robot Tornado, one of the top Robot Wars robots in the UK. We have been very sucessful; our team have designed and built a machine that has beaten almost all challengers, and we have taken part in six televised series. I spend much of my spare time working on the robot and maintaining its website at http://www.teamtornado.co.uk/.

I enjoy keeping active; I play football weekly with my work colleagues, and I ride a bike to get around and (when I have time) for recreation also.

At university I was a member of the Motor club, and continued to participate for a couple of years after graduation. Generally I navigated on scatters (which required the ability to think under pressure), and also participated in the karting championship. As an active member of the Motor club I was awarded half University Colours.

POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY

As Team Captain of our Robot Wars team it is my responsibility to speak for the team when required, and to organise our calendar, making sure we can attend all the events and filming which we would like to. I maintain the team accounts, and liaise with the press and TV companies when required. Recently I have joined a small group that sits between the many hundreds of UK roboteers and the television company that produces the show.

Within NXT, the responsibility I have been given has grown as I have spent longer working within the company. I am being given independence on my own projects, and am trusted to return them completed and on time.

Until moving to Huntingdon I was a leader with the local Young Ornithologists Club group (the junior branch of the RSPB), I am also an RSPB member.

OTHER INFORMATION

I have held a full clean driving licence since November 1996, and I have my own transport.
