Diving the Sankisan Maru

The Sankisan Maru was a combined freighter and aricraft ferry, captured in 1942 shortly after the outbreak of hostilities. A US vessel, her original name was the Red Hook and she traded along the coast of the Pacific Northwest during the depression. She was a medium sized ship, 5000 tons and 365 feet long at the waterline, powered by a coal fired steam turbine. Her surviving holds contain Mitsubishi A6M Reisen fighters, the famed Zero, and ordinance including piles of machine gun amunition. Aft of the superstructure the ship has disintegrated due to a violent explosion. The Sankisan lies bow high 100 feet from the surface with the remains of her stern in a crater formed when she blew up.
