Suzanne Hendricks: From Guam with Love

We met Suzanne a few years back in Truk. Her and her husband Dave are Micronesian locals, since they live on Guam. Guam, while not part of the Federated States of Micronesia, is actually the largest island of the Micronesian island group. She works for Air Mike, which is the Micronesian subsidiary of Continental Airlines. Sue travels around the islands of the western Pacific and gets paid to do it.

Here's Suzanne, waving "hi"

Over the years, Sue and Dave have become great friends. They're aging west-coast beach bums, really, who took off for the tropics "back in the day" and never came back. Now, they are taking the increased responsibility that goes with home-ownership and child rearing without, growing up and becoming old at heart.

Sue's moment in history's spotlight came a copule of years ago when her plane was chartered to retrieve the crew of an American surveillance aircraft that was forced down over Red China. It seems that the US plane voilated Chinese airspace, and the Red Air Force sent a MIG fighter to intercept. The Chinese fighter pilot ended up crashing, and the unarmed US aircraft was damaged and had to make an emergency landing in China. At first, the Red government refused to release the US plane's crew, but they finally came to their senses and allowed a civilian aircraft to come and pick the crew up. This is a link to the Haze Gray and Underway gallery of photos that were taken during the flight home, and here's a shot of both the Navy and Continental Airline crews. Sue's in the front row, second from the right.
