Fishing Season Totals

11-7- I left Shelter Island at 7 and headed for the 302 started trolling the area at 9. Saw a few paddies and very large schools of dolphin but no fish. decided to troll down to the 371, then below and outside of it.It appeared to be lifeless and dead. at about 11:00 Somebody came over the radio and said they had 30-40 jumping dorado around their boat and gave out the numbers: 32.26 x 117.38. We made an hour run to those numbers and put the troll pattern out 2 miles before we got there. Shortly after we trolled by a small paddy and the Mean jo green went off for a small yellowtail. Then the whole pacific exploded when we thru out a scoop of chum... there were jumping Dorado every where, cast out instant hook-ups!Yea Baby! We stayed with this 1 paddy for 1.5 hours and limited out. This area was approx. 4-5 miles west of the 302. Excellent day on the water and I didn't have to watch the Lousy chargers!!! Kyle

10-25- Went out on the rebuilt Aquasport to an area 20 miles Northwest of La Jolla, trolled all day for nothing, only saw 2 dorado finning on the surface. Only heard of one boat catching some. ocean was flat calm and great just no fish!!!

10-14- Well Marlin have invaded all inner offshore backs everywhere...Go out and catch one but practice catch and release as they do taste like crap. Of Further note.... The reason my web site has not been very active is my boat has had both the engine and outdrive replaced this summer and it only has about 10 hours on it with the new package, Anyways i'm going out this Saturday hopefully and will report back any and all news good or bad......later!

9-14- Local fishing is dead,dead,dead...Albies still going strong outside... this is it for ocean fishing, looks like the local season has dried up.

8-26- Went fishing on a 1 day boat out of H&M Sportfishing called the Ranger 85, A real OLD PC. of ....crap.I wouldnt recomend to anyone! But anyways The Albacore were biting the paint off the boat and I landed 11 for the day. We were fishing an area approx. 72 miles 220 from point loma in the area of the Airplane bank. Hot jig color was green head and skirt with purple feathers inside. I have tons of fish,,,,to much!

8-14- took boat out to San Vicente and it ran good. Yeah!!

8-9- New Engine is installed!!!! $$$$$ Big bucks!!!!! Should be ready to go in 1 week, stay tuned for the reports to start flowing .....I can hardly wait to go fishing Again ......

7/8Reports on hold...... replacing engine, Major job!! will advice when she is ready to fish again

7/5 Went out on the J-Seas, for a quick shot at the albies. Went to the 425 area and hooked 5 albies and 1 yellowtail off a paddy, not wide open but pic here pic there, water was more sloppy but not bad, great fishing overall!!!

7/1 Went out on the Aquasport, First tried IB, lots of bait in the water but no fish, then went to Bull ring area for nothing. Then shot over to the Islands to find a wide open bite on big yellowtail to 25 pounds. Nailed 6 fishing 2-3 miles south of South Island. Fish would come up a feed for 5 minutes then go back down and pop up again over and over. Then Headed offshore to 425 area, arriving around noon. From area reports bite was good for limits in the morning, then shuting down around 10am.We trolled for 2 hours for no albies but boated a nice 25# yellowtail from a kelp patty 5 miles south of the 425. Ocean conditions are as good as they get!!! No wind and flat as a pancake.

6/27 Albacore are moving up north, The 425 area & 43 Fathom spot-south is the ticket. Watch out for those North Winds!!!!! I don't think I would ever say this, but a westerly heading is the smoothest ride out and back now!! Going South you will get the crap kicked out of you coming home.....That will change I'm sure , but for now that the way it is....

6/24 Went out on the Aquasport in hopes of going 35-38 miles 180 from the Point to find some Albacore. I stopped at the middle grounds for a little breather and decided to troll thru on my way. dropped back a blue/silver cd-18 and was hammered in about 5 minutes, 15 lb yellowtail. After that I decided to get on the radio and troll some more. The reports from the radio from all boats inside of 40 miles was bad.....No Fish, the wind was Howling 25+ and there were whitecaps everywhere. I was told by boaters that I would stay put if I were you and so I did, While fishing, the only reports I heard were of one boat finding albies in the 371 area. Fished out the rest of the day for 2 barracuda and 2 calico's. Then got the crap kicked out of me with 3-4 wind chop(Coming from the North) and took 1 hour 40 minutes to get home fom the Islands!!!

6/16/99 Went out fishing today on the Aquasport I decided to fish the Coronados. Started at Pukey Pt. then middle grounds then ribbon kelp then down to the rockpile. fishing both iron and bait produced nothing except 2 small calico bass. Then spent the next 2 hours fishing the high tide, drift fishing for Halibut on the lee of south Island. I managed 3 hook-ups, 1 small and 2 keepers. the 2 keepers came on a double hook-up in 50 feet of water and were 30" and 33". I then went for a scuba dive and found out the conditions first hand... Top 30 feet of water was 66' clear and blue, then massive thermocline and dirty upwelling water down to the bottom and a very cold 58'!!!! it felt like an iceberg down at 60 feet. Anyways pretty leisure fishing on the Halibut if you get run down lookin for tuna. good luck fishing

6/12/99 Fishing for Albacore is really a big hit on the water front. For the first time in recent history the 3/4 day boats are picking Albacore up to the tune of 1 a rod!!!I cannot remember ( in the last 25 or 30 years at least) a 3/4 day boat connecting with Albies, Yellowfin yes... but not Albies. This is a great oportunity for the private boater indeed! The fish have been coming up from the south. A good place for the private boater would be around the 425-371-302 loop and then just a little outside of that. This just might be a great Albacore season, Keep your fingers crossed and hope they don't disappear as fast as they came thru here!!! Goood luck everyone....

5-30-99 went out on the Aquasport for yellowtail fishing. The counts were good earlier in the week so I felt good about catching some. arrived at Coronados around 7:30 and the place looked like a ghost town. I tried a few reefs but nothing happened not even a bite. So we went to the rockpile and put out Rapalas trolling and managed 2 big cudas. We then went a bit further down finger bank for nothing and decided to come back to the Islands for some Halibut and Calico fishing. after fishing up until 12:30 we only caught 2 short bass and decided to call it a day. Then THE BOAT STOPPED WORKING!!!. To add to an already long day then the damn boat just died and had to call for a tow all the way from the middle grounds to Shelter Island boat dock!!! 3 hours later around 5pm the boat was finally on the trailer and headed for home .. What a DAy!!!!

5-8-99: Nice weather has finally arrived Yeah!!! water is still to cold for the yellows to come up top and bite Yur best shot at one would be to go down to the rock pile or So. Coronado Island and try Yo yo deep chances are about 10-20% of landing a fish. Best bet is halibut drift fishing off South Coronado Is. Lets hope you have a economical boat, gas is getting expensive for those long boat rides!!!

4-25-99: Day at the docks today!! Fishing has slowed quite a bit, but fish are still there for the jig throwin fisherman. I talked with 1 boater who just got back and he landed 2 tails in the #20 range fishing south of South Island, fishing the ridge on down to the rockpile. He said all white jigs were the ticket today... It's not very good fishing yet, in fact chances are 50/50 you will return empty handed.... but hey there's more to fishing than just fishing...Right?

4-17-99:Fishing on the Aquasport 20' 1st trip of year to the Coronado Islands, Fog was really a problem it took 2 hours to get there fron Shelter Island, Bait barge was really hard to find! Anyways on about the 5 cast with a blue/White iron man #5 I nailed a nice 24# pounder at North Island (Secret Spot)"big and fat" it put up a really good fight . Spent the rest of the afternoon throwing the jig about 300 more times for nothing and nothing bit on the bait . Anyways a good way to start the year with a fish like that.

More to come!!!.

Good luck Fishing!
