Wisconsin State Fair 1955 and who is in the front of the pack? Buick!!!
Europe was making some nice fast cars also as you can see above.
These are a few of the Buicks muscle cars. The 63 Wildcat
and the 66 Skylark GS (bottom right) came standard with a 401 cu. in. motor
called "Wildcat 445" and an optional 425 cu. in. 360 hp. Super Wildcat
engine. The Super Wildcat came with 2 four barrels one of the most
powerful engines in a car that I have ever driven. I've been behind the
wheel of the 1969 Dodge Charger with a 440 cu. in. power plant ,and also
a 65 Dodge Coronet with a 426 wedge. I'd take the 65 Skylark GS with
the Super Wildcat engine over either one of them any day. The Grand
National was one of the first cars ti show how powerful the V6 was. Back
in 1963 I drag raced a Buick Special V6 and won many times against
V8 chevys. It was no surprise to me how fast the V6 was. In the fifties
and sixties some of the fastest cars ever built were made. Also some of
the best looking cars of all times. Here are a couple of them.
You could get a 409 cu. in. engine in this 1962 Impala. With that motor
this chevy would fly down the road, and also win a lot of races at the
drag strip. If that was not big enough you could get a 427 cu. in. motor
that was so powerful the NASCAR outlawed it from the NASCAR races. If you
just liked fast take off the 327 cu. in. short block was you motor. If
you were not into speed it even came with an in line six cylinder for good
gas performance.
This 1963 studabaker Avanti came with a short block 289 cu. in. engine.
After driving it with your foot in it you would think it was much larger
than just a 289. The unix styling still looks good today, even better than
most of the new cars made today. Most new cars today just copy some
other design and put their name on it. Back in the 50's and 60's you could
tell who made what. Now a days you can't tell them apart.
