Originally from the State of Jalisco in Mexico, Fr. Luis is from a faithful Catholic family and is one of 20 children. Fr. Luis says he has fond memories of growing up. He described his family as humble and hard-working, a farming family that never went a day without praying the Rosary together. The Gutierrez family cherished each other and bore trials together, relying in an intimate way on Divine Providence as their only true hope. “There were days when we did not have food to eat for the next day, but my mother always trusted in God,” says Fr. Luis. “And He always provided.” Fr. Luis’ parents come from a long line of pious followers of Christ. There are actually 28 priests between both sides of his family. In a few years, he will have two more cousins who will be ordained as priests. Since Fr. Luis was very young, Christ has been tapping gently on his heart and soul, calling him to the Divine vocation of the priesthood. As a boy, he loved to pretend he was a priest and “play Mass,” continually desiring to become one. It was his dream, and God’s dream, too. The best part is, it was a dream that came true. In 1998, Fr. Luis was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Joliet. Inheriting his mother’s trust in Divine Providence, he worked extremely hard at studying thoroughly for the priesthood. He earned a bachelor’s degree at DePaul University in Chicago and a master’s of Divinity from Sacred Heart School of Theology in Wisconsin. Fr. Luis’ first assignment was to St. Isidore’s in Bloomingdale, IL. Next, he served as the Parochial Vicar at St. Dominic Parish in Bolingbrook, before being assigned to our parish. “I will love serving the family of St. Joseph’s,” says Fr. Luis. “I don’t plan to change anything, but I will continue what is being done. I am still learning, so if you can be patient with me, that would be great!” Another great blessing is that two of his sisters, Andrea and Irma Gutierrez, are parishioners of St. Joseph’s, and live only a few blocks away. Throughout his life, Fr. Luis has known the importance of relying on a life of prayer. Every day, he prays to the saints, and says he especially draws inspiration from St. Cristobal Magallanes, a 20th century Mexican martyr, whom he says is actually related to him. Fr. Luis also finds himself profoundly inspired by his mother and father, now deceased, and prays to them. Fr. Luis, with prayer and open arms and hearts, we welcome you to St. Joseph’s Church!

Luís dice que tiene grandes recuerdos de su niñez. El describe a su familia como humilde y muy trabajadora, una familia agrícola que nunca dejaba de pasar un día sin rezar el Rosario juntos. Los Gutiérrez se animaban los unos a los otros y luchaban juntos entre las dificultades, confiando de una manera intima en la Divina Providencia como su verdadera esperanza. “Había días donde no teníamos nada para comer para el próximo día, pero mi mamá siempre confiaba en Dios, y El siempre proveía.” Los papas del P. Luís vienen de una larga línea de seguidores de Cristo. Hay 28 sacerdotes entre los dos lados de su familia. En algunos años dos mas de sus primos serán ordenados sacerdotes. Desde que el P. Luís era muy joven, Cristo h ha venido tocándole gentilmente en su corazón y en su alma, llamándolo a la divina vocación del sacerdocio. Cuando era niño le encantaba pretender que el era un sacerdote y jugaba a la “Misa”, continuamente deseando ser uno. Era un sueño, y el sueño de Dios también. La mejor parte es que fue un sueño hecho realidad. En 1998, el P. Luís fue ordenado un sacerdote para la Diócesis de Joliet. Heredando la confianza de su mamá en la Divina Providencia, trabajo extremadamente duro a través de su estudio al sacerdocio. Recibió su Licenciatura en la Universidad de DePaul en Chicago y una maestría en divinidad de la escuela de Teología del Sagrado Corazón en Wisconsin. El primer trabajo del P. Luís fue en San Isidoro en Bloomingdale, IL. Después sirvió como Vicario Parroquial en Santo Domingo en Bolingbrook, antes de ser asignado a nuestra parroquia. “Me va a encantar servir a la familia de San José”, dijo el P. Luís. “Yo no planeo cambiar nada, pero voy a continuar lo que se esta llevando acabo. ¡Todavía estoy aprendiendo, entonces si pueden ser pacientes conmigo, seria maravilloso!” Otra bendición es que dos de sus hermanas, Andrea e Irma Gutiérrez, son feligreses de San José y viven a solo unas cuadras de la parroquia. A través de su vida, el P. Luís ha sabido la importancia de permanecer en una vida de oración. Cada día, el ora a los santos, y dice que el especialmente atrae su inspiración de San Cristóbal Magallanes, un mártir Mexicano del siglo 20, quien dice que realmente es familiar de el. El P. Luís se encuentra profundamente inspirado por su mamá y su papá, ahora fallecidos, y les ora a ellos. ¡P.
