Painting Tips and Tricks
Why should I paint my Jeep parts?
Painting is a vital step in restoring your Jeep! Primarly, any exposed metal will quickly accumulate rust deposits and spots. These spots deteroriate the underlying steel, causing structural weakness and greatly shortening the life. In addition, a rust coated underbody gives the apperance of disrepair and will take away from the hard work that you put into restoring your Jeep.
Step 1: Clean the metal. Clean, clean and clean. Without cleaning, the paint sticks to dirt
instead of the metal which leads to spotting and rusting. I use Simple Green cleaner to
get the metal ready for priming.
Step 2: Prime the metal with a primer. Use a clean-metal primer if the metal is not rusty
or use a Rusty-Metal primer if the metal has quite a bit of rust. (Be sure to wire brush
loose rust off before priming.) The primer coat provides a medium between the bare
metal and the paint. It iss very important because it bonds the paint to the metal. Without
a good primer coat the metal will rust easily. Do not stop here, however. The primer
coat asorbs moisture and it will rust without a topcoat. Wait a minimum of twenty-four
hours before applying a topcoat.
Step 3: Apply a topcoat. The topcoat is the finish layer of paint. Make sure to completely
cover every bit of primed metal to prevent rusting. I usually apply two topcoats about
four hours apart.
