RECYCLED  BUGGY Page 1

Building a Buggy the Hard Way

This "UGLY DUCKLING" is what we started with, along with a T trailer that we bought in 1995.We had a lot of work ahead of us to get it to a finished product. And to top it all off...no garage !! It was at the mercy of the weather that we did get it finished.Of course weather did cause some delays, and only being able to work on it in the summer created a major delay. But we had plenty of time to plan and order new parts..

The first step in the teardown was to take everything off of the buggy and check out the frame The engine was scrap and that was the first item to order....the case !!! We stripped the frame to bare metal and replaced tubes as needed. All in all the frame was in pretty good shape.I did replace the top bars with lower bars and slanted the windshield back 8". Grinding off past owners ideas and mistakes proved to be a chore. The frame is a Berrien 902 with an added on rear cage. I liked that idea because it gave me places to put my fuel tank, oil cooler, coil and crankcase breather..

Once the grinding and repairing was completed,it was time to primer the frame and apply the finish coats of paint. On calm days the frame was painted with 3 primer coats and 6 finish coats. Then 3 coats of clear to finish it off and make it easier to wash the mud off !!!
