2" Performance Accessories Body Lift on a 92 YJ

This body lift is the first modification I did to my stock-since-92 Wrangler. After a few trips to the woods around central Louisiana I decided I needed something bigger than my stock 215 tires to get over or small ledges, up and down our short but sometimes steep hills, and through our plentiful and deep mud. I plan to put enough lift on to put on 32x11.50’s and this body lift is the first step in that. In addition to the 2" body lift, I’ll put 1" extended shackles in the next few weeks to give a total of 3 inches lift. This should give me enough clearance to run the 32’s. I realize that a shackle is not the best lift, but I’ve talked to quite a few folks and the mild 1" extensions shouldn’t present a problem. In the future, I may replace the shackles with a 2.5" suspension lift.

When I first thought about doing the lift, I got on the Jeep newsgroup and asked many questions from the wealth of knowledge on that group. Everyone told me that the body lift was very simple and I wouldn’t have much trouble. Well, you know how that can go – experience always makes tasks seem easier and I really wondered if my limited (almost non-existent) mechanical experience would get me through it. This page shows my process pretty much step-by-step. The folks on the Jeep group were right. As you will see the process really is fairly simple.

I hope this page shows those thinking about doing this for the first time how easy the project is. Just allow plenty of time, have good tools, and follow the directions that came with the kit. The directions are pretty good but skipped some things I needed to do and includes things I didn’t need to do. I’ll point these out in the process. I’ll go through the lift in the order given in the directions and discuss anything extra I did and what I left out. If any experienced body-lifters see something I did wrong or could have done better, please let me know.

To prepare for this, I bought a floor jack and a couple of jack stands (I didn’t need the stands for the body lift but figured I’d use them later). You’ll also need a good set of sockets, a torque wrench, maybe a cheater pipe to loosen the body bolts, white model paint, Liquid Wrench or similar penetrating lube, blue Lock-tite, a 4x4 board or a couple 2x4’s about 3 feet long to lift the body, and a cutting tool or hacksaw.
