The friendly folks at the South Bay Camera Club invite you to join us. Club Membership brings many benefits. Print and slide competitions are evaluated and scored by experienced photo judges whose constructive criticism helps us to improve our photography. Print and slide study groups further enhance our understanding of what makes a winning photograph.
The Club has competitions in Color, Phototravel, Photojournalism, Nature and Prints. Winning color slides are used in monthly S4C (Southern California Council of Camera Clubs) contests. All other categories can be entered in individual S4C competitions 10 times a year.
Outings and organized Club photo shoots give additional opportunity to fine tune our skills as photographers. Come to our Club competition. Guests are always welcome!
Annual Club dues are $30. For more information, please contact Helen Weinman @ (310) 371-2263.
Competition Category Descriptions
Nature
The Nature Category is restricted to the use of photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history, except Anthropology and Archaeology, in such fashion that a well informed person will be able to identify the subject material and to certify to its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighted more than the pictorial quality. Human elements shall not be present unless, on rare occasion, where human elements enhance the Nature story, they are unobtrusive. Photographs of artificially produced hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, obviously set arrangements, derivations, or any form of photographic manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement are ineligible, with the exception of detailed micro or macro photographs and scientific banding on wild animals.
Photojournalism
Photojournalism entries shall consist of story telling pictures or sequences such as are seen in the news media, including human interest, documentary and spot news. In the interest of credibility, contrived situations or photographic manipulations which misrepresent the truth are unacceptable. The journalistic value of the photograph shall be considered more than the pictorial quality.
Phototravel
A color travel slide or print which captures the feeling of a time and a place and portrays a land, a people or a culture in its natural state. Photo-travel pictures have no geographical limitations: they are not limited to other lands or countries, and may include those of domestic origin. Ultra close-ups, which lose their identity, studio type model pictures or obviously manipulated slides do not qualify, they are ineligible and should not be submitted.
A Word on Color Slides
What makes a successful photograph? To some, the criterion for successful pictures is how many ribbons they have won in S4C competition. To others, getting a 9 in the Camera Club competition is the pinnacle of success. Many photographers measure the success of their pictures by how many "oohs" and "ahs" they get in a slide show. Whatever the standard of success, this piece of advice is recommended. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
