To Impeach
Or Not Impeach?
Is That the Question?

It seems to me there is a group of people in Congress
Who do not know what they want from our President.

They do not accept the apologies or explanations
He has given
about what he did or did not do-
They show relentless pursuit in destroying
his presidency at any cost...

They show no compassion whatsoever
for the President’s wife or daughter,
those many of us who voted for this man.

In fact there seems no compassion whatsoever
in the hearts and words of these people.

Where is all this hatred coming from?
That is what I see in their faces,
hear in their voices.

I do not hear genuine concern for our country,
how our country is bearing this.
They mouth that they are concerned about
the morality the President is setting for young people
but their words sound so intellectual and vain…
They do not sound sincere.

They talk about this ‘Obstruction of Justice’ and
‘Perjury’ (based on a possible sexual seduction)
as if this is a HIGH CRIME AND MISDOMENOR
of the worst kind…

I’ve never heard any of these people get this upset
over Murderers…Rapists…
They aren’t this angry at the guy who blew up
all those people in Oklahoma...they aren’t.
I hear no deep bitterness like this in any of them
about the many really horrifying things
our country has endured this last year,
is enduring right now.

This bothers me.
It bothers me that they are this concerned over a
convoluted ‘lie’ (or convoluted lie…),
and not deeply bothered by grave matters
that keep many of us awake at night worrying.

I look at them on television mystified and confused,
frightened...
where is their horrible rage coming from?

Another thing bothers me:
the flippant Republican attitude toward Censure.
They act as if Censure is nothing,
not even a slap on the wrist...
They crack these horrible jokes...
It's disgusting.

Censure is a terrible thing to bear.
To be censured by your peers and colleagues
is almost more than a human being can bear.
It would be a dreadful thing in my opinion
to have to live with.

My concern lately has been that President Clinton
might have a heart attack or stroke
if some of this pressure isn’t diminished –
I really don’t think this man
OR ANY MAN OR WOMAN
can hold up much longer under this kind
of pressure
(and I’ve just lost someone I love
To a stroke and pressure...it's real.)

I tried to tell more than one person
he was dying
and I think most people just thought I was
hysterical...over-emotional...
Well, he's dead as a doornail now.

We’re killing President Clinton already.
I can see it in his face,
I can hear it in his voice;
I can see it in his walk and posture.

President Clinton’s heart is broken.
He will never recover from this ordeal,
no matter what happens –
Impeachment or censure, resignation.

The Presidency ages men terribly.
Hasn’t anyone noticed that? It does.
But no President we have ever had has
had to endure this kind of horrible
embarrassment and continual, continual
harassment and deep hatred.

The hatred I hear alarms me...
I do a doubletake.
What is our President going through?
I cannot imagine, but I know the pain
has to be incredible.

The only other time in my life
I have seen this kind of deep anger
and hatred has been in children
whose father has betrayed their mother,
the Dad who’s had some kind of terrible tacky affair
that’s broken the mother’s heart and
tragically upset the child’s life and soul.
James Dickey’s son comes to my mind
for instance...did you read his book?
His Dad was really a jerk to his Mom...

But these people are not children whose fathers
have done them in...
and they are angry,angry,angry...
Hey, wait a minute –
Are they?
I often wonder how many of the people who
deeply hate Clinton have gotten the shaft
from their own genetic fathers?

I’m one of those people myself.
What I’ve seen is that we react one or two ways:
We internalize our pain
and try to have some kind of relationship...
because somewhere in us we love our Dad
(and we want a Dad, even if he has
broken our hearts...)

Or, we withdraw and intellectualize our pain,
become very cold somehow.

In both cases, we never want to be ‘like that’
and the forgiveness never feels right.
Most of us hide our shame deeply in one of our closets
and try to have the best life we can.

(Look, I'm being very brave to admit this about myself.)
(It's sure not something I'm proud of.)

The fact is I don’t like that President Clinton
may have had an affair or did have one...or more than one.
It makes my stomach hurt to think he may be
a womanizer, a dirty old man type...
you know, one of those who always wants
to tell you an off-color joke...
whose eye always notices the pretty stewardesses,
the pretty waitresses…the sexy secretaries...

No doubt Clinton is a complicated man.
No doubt he has certainly made some enemies.

It seems to me THAT is what he’s paying for now,
not Obstruction of Justice or Perjury...
Whatever personal thing he’s done to make enemies
he is surely paying for big time now.

Many of us are paying I think,
And I don't like that. Do you?

I personally don’t think anyone in Congress gives a rip
About what he did with or to Monica Lewinsky
(or Paula Jones)...et al...
I don’t think House members care about any
woman that much...
None of these people seem to genuinely like women.

And they don’t care what working people think...
Or black people...poor people...

They care about revenge
and getting even.
They think they have a chance to do that;
and it appears they will do just that.
And, Oh...
these people reek of envy and jealousy.

I don’t think we can stop these Republicans –
they do not care what we think -
and there is no forgiveness in these virtual unknowns...
They are, as my grandma would say, hell-bent.

If President Clinton is removed from office,
are they going to proceed to destroy Gore?
It appears Gore better have a suit of armor handy...

This team plays only hardball.
That’s their daily bread.
I don’t think Clinton has had a chance at all...
I’m not sure Gore even knows the script,
Much less how to play this game.

What I wonder is:
Who is it they want to be President?
Who is this holy wonder, this perfect man?

I just heard the President has 24 hours
To say something that might change ‘people’s minds’
(people being members of The House).

I don’t think so, folks, I don’t think so...
I think Clinton is down for the count tonight.
On that sentence, I'm going to bed.
