Causes of corrosion in reinforced concrete

Steel corrosion in concrete is an electrochemical process which consist of two partial reactions: at the anode, the metal is broken down into ions and these react further with the hydroxyl ions formed at the cathode. The electrons released at the anode have to be absorbed at the cathode due to electroneutrality. The corresponding reaction is oxygen reduction. Therefore the corrosion only occurs if the partial current density es equal at the anode and the cathode.

Sika Ferrogard 901 is an active corrosion inhibitor designed to extend the life of exposed reinforced concrete structures. It is added to the fresh concrete and absorbs on the reinforcement in a very short time. It reduces corrosion of the steel without affecting the properties of the fresh and hardened concrete

The Concrete Impregnation: Sika Ferrogard 903

Sika Ferrogard 903 is an aqueous impregnation which is applied to the concrete surface. It quickly penetrates the concrete by liquid and vapor diffusion. Sika Ferrogard 903 has a high affinity to steel and forms a protective film on the steel surface. This delays the onset of corrosion and the corrosion rate is considerably reduced without affecting the concrete properties.
