Dry Plate Process

Dr. Richard Maddox discovered a way to use Gelatin instead of glass as a basis for the photographic plate leading to the development of the dry plate process. In 1880, the wet plate became dry allowing an exposed picture to be developed weeks later.

George Eastman manufactured dry plates and decided that the dry plates were too cumbersome to be carried around for the taking of each picture. He solved this problem with the invention of flexible film. Eastman patented a camera loaded with flexible film and called it the Kodak camera.

With the invention of the Kodak camera, an individual could take pictures at any time and any place. This led to the mass spread of photography to include motion shots allowing the first movies to be filmed and the use of photograpy to display poor human conditions across the country . All of these advancements lead to the role of the camera in today's society.
