The earliest known permanent camera image done from nature was made by Joseph Nicephore Niepce. Niepce did not set out to make a photograph, rather, he set out to make a photo-lithograph. It used materials that hardened when exposed to light, which took a total of eight hours. This process is called heliography or sunwriting.
