CERTIFICATION

While certification is not a requisite for employment, it is nonetheless highly recommended. Many employers expect their BMETs to become certified for advancement or promotion. Recent studies have shown that technicians with certification, on average, earn more. The certification examination is under the auspices of the International Certification Commission (ICC). This certification is internationally recognized. BMETs who are certified hold the title of CBET (certified biomedical equipment technician). CBETs are recognized for having the competency to handle general biomedical equipment, including lab and radiology equipment. For those interested in specializing in either lab equipment or radiology equipment, there is a separate certification exam for each of these two areas. Those certified as lab equipment specialists hold the title of CLES (certified lab equipment specialist) and those certified as radiology equipment specialists hold the title of CRES (certified radiology equipment specialist).

Information about the nature of the exam, test sites, fees, candidacy, etc. can be obtained from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). See the links below.

From time to time Gateway Community-Technical College offers a review class (not sanctioned by the ICC) to prepare candidates for the exam. Study aids (also not sanctioned by the ICC) are available from various Biomedical/Clinical Engineering Societies, such as the SBET (society for biomedical equipment technicians)and AAMI.
