Hello! Thanks for stopping by my little spot on the web. There really isn't anything important here, but you can find out a little about me. Please feel free to make a comment to me on what you see here. I am open to all sorts of suggestions, since I'm just playing with this and still learning.
I am a Marine Engineer - that means I run the propulsion plants that make ships go. I have almost 18 years of experience in the Navy with steam ships (after graduating from VMI, the Virginia Military Institute). Unlike many of my Navy colleagues, I have a Coast Guard issued 2nd Assistant Engineer's license which I got on my own after gaining experience in Navy steam plants. It isn't just making the ship go through the water, though. Marine engineers do all sorts of things. We provide all electrical power, sewage, water and telephone services on the ship. We also repair anything that breaks, from the hull fittings right down to simple things like bookshelves. And of course, we travel. Right now, I'm teaching marine engineering at the Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, RI.
I have all sorts of hobbies, most of them expensive. I like to play with my computer, and I like to hike, camp and canoe. I am an Amateur Extra Class Radio Operator (Ham) with callsign N1KX (ex-KQ6SL, ex-KE6IEN). I am a member of the DX Century Club, an award sponsored by the American Radio Relay League for members who make confirmed two-way contacts with at least 100
different countries using Amateur Radio. I started in October 1997, and it took me a year to get those first 100 contacts made and confirmed. Now I have contacts with hams in over 260 countries, and 255 of them are confirmed. If you are interested in Ham Radio click here to go to the Newport County Amateur Radio Club page and also the American Radio Relay League. I also scuba dive, rollerblade, and read a lot of history and biography stuff. I am particularly interested in space exploration.
