Teaching Computers to Young Children

In an age where more and more of our life is regulated by computers, it is important that children learn to use this tool as early as possible. As a teacher of computer science, I see many parents who are pleased to tell me that their children are "experts" at using the computer at home. This is true as far as it goes. Most kids with a home computer can use the keyboard, and are somewhat familiar with Internet. However, I find most of my pupils are incapable of organizing material on a computer, word-processing above a very primitive level, or seriously researching a subject on the Net. These are skills which I and other teachers in Israel are trying to impart to our students, and are what is usually going on in a "Computer Lesson."

However, I think that we are doing our pupils a great disservice by not familiarizing them somewhat with the language of computing. Learning a computer language teaches valuable skills such as: organization, mathematical reasoning, planning and execution, and the ability to plan and carry out an idea from inception to conclusion. If the purpose of any education system is to teach its students to think, then what better way than to use the computer in its purest form!

At the Gomey Elementary School in the North of Israel, we have found that teaching computing with the "Logo" language answers our needs.
