What is a virtual airline?

This is not a new idea and most of you may know virtual airlines. As flight simulations (most of all Microsoft Flightsimulator and SUBLogic ATP) have become so realistic, the idea was right at hand and realized some years ago in electronic communication networks. There are virtual airlines in most international nets like Compuserve, AOL, Prodigy, Internet and FSFan.

Virtual airlines are formed and work in very different ways. Some are trying to simulate a company as realistically as possible, others have a more, relaxed, fun, style. In some airlines you have to apply to become a member and have to wait before you can fly for the airline. Others are more open and you can start flying at once. Virtual airlines offer flight assignments. You fly the assignment and report to the airline by mailing a flight report into the network, usually by sending an e-mail message to the airline office. Assignments could be flying lines between two airports anywhere in the scenery-world, assignments also could be adventure-like missions, where you have to be successful in fulfilling some tasks. After reporting to the airline office, usually you will receive some kind of reward: you are paid with virtual money and/or are listed in a ranking list, where you can step up, when you have done some work for the company.
