A lot of people call the 1930's the "golden age of aviation", but I think that the 1940's is when aviation came of age. WW I was a war of trenches, and poisen gas - aviation was a factor, but not a major factor.

WW II was the first true "air war", where strategic bombing, massive flight engagements, and carrier warfare were born.

The planes were aerodymanically sleeker, and faster - and the warplanes were far deadlier in WW II.
