How homepage is built?

This page is initially built in 'Microsoft FrontPage (MS office 2000)', and then uploaded to 'File Manager' of hosting page  www.geocities.com. Minor corrections were made in the 'index.htm' and other .htm files. It is too simple. You can try. It is same as you are working in 'Ms Word'. Here are few tips for building your page with Microsoft Front Page and 'geocities' as (free) host. Of course you should have a yahoo id and subscribe for space with www.geocities.com.

Make a folder and keep all the pages and graphics in the same folder.

As you know the first page that appear in your homepage will be 'index.htm'

The useful sites will be http://www.gifanimations.com for downloading some of the icons/image/gif files that can be used in the page.

Insert 'Table' frequently for uniformity or symmetry. Pull the lines of the table to bring it to proper dimension. If you don't want the table 'lines' to be visible in the page, select the table and right click, select table properties in the menu and give the value '0' in Border size.

For background better use colours or images (downloaded from 'www.gifanimation.com') and avoid using 'Themes' of Ms frontpage.

The moving line that you are seeing is called 'Marquee'. Type the 'words/line' you want move and select it. Go to 'Insert' menu and select 'component' and the 'Marquee'. You can set its properties there like how it should move etc.

Insert pictures as you do in 'word' and format it.

For hyperlink, highlight the line you want to link, right click and select hyperlink (or from insert menu). Type the web address or web page name that you have built. You can also browse and select the page. Check the icons next to URL column in hyperlink menu, then convey different purposes. For hyper link with in page, bookmark (insert menu) the line/heading you want to link. The select the line/words you want link with the headings/paragraph with in the page. Right click, see there is one bookmark window in the hyperlink window and select it. Now it is linked.

For 'email link' select your name or any word you want link and select 'send to' (envelop) icon and type the email address in the URL column. Sometimes if you type the email address it will take automatically.

Keep 'previewing' the page every now and then and correct it till it satisfies you.

Once all the pages are ready uploaded all the files including graphics to 'File Manager'. You need not click the boxes below the uploading windows which says the following *Automatically convert filenames to lowercase *Automatically change ".htm" extensions to ".html"

The 'geocities' will automatically take the file 'index.htm' as the first or front page of your homepage. Click/write URL of your homepage and check. If you have inserted pictures in index file it may not appear or links may not connect. For this you have edit 'index' (and other file too) file. Open the file 'index.htm' from 'File Manager' (by selecting the file and clicking 'edit'). It will appear in 'HTML' format. When you insert picture from any folder while working in FrontPage in htm language it even takes complete location (like "../My Documents/Homepage/Sanjeeva/pic.jpg"). You should delete its location details/root and keep only file name. You can preview while editing index file and see. Save and exit. This exercise is to be carried out to all the html file you are building.

HTML language is sensitive to small/capital letters and file extension too like .jpg, .gif, .doc etc. Be careful about the file names.

Never give space between words while naming a file. Such files will not be uploaded to 'File Manager'.

This is much is more than enough to build a fairly good looking page. With MS FrontPage you can do many more things without learning complicated HTML.

Good Luck
