Croatian Air Force
Messerschmitt Bf-109G-10

I built my Bf-109G-10 from the Hobbycraft (HC1522) "Axis Allies" kit. The later 109's from Hobbycraft were a bit of a disappointment after the early B,C,D and E kits, particularly in the fit department. There is a very noticeable, and therefore unacceptable, step between the wing and the fuselage joint that will require a bit of work, as well as a rather sparse cockpit area. The wings, unlike Hobbycraft's early 109's, do not come with separate flaps. This was one of the more redeeming features of the early kits.

The only enhancement to the cockpit area I made was to add seatbelts and buckles made from masking tape. Being a lifelong member of the 1-foot club, I was able to live with that. I filed and sanded the fuselage where the wings attached and assembled the kit with Tenax cement and painted it with Testor's ModelMaster enamels overall.

The decals (all 12 of them) went on ok, and the Croatian Coat of Arms on the tail comes in 2 pieces, a white base and then the red checks to go over it.

There are 5 alternative markings included with the kit. The one I did was a Croatian machine which, according to the instructions was based in Northern Italy in 1945. I have always wanted a Croatian 109, something about the cross with the leaf inside it. The others are 2 Luftwaffe machines, an Italian machine and a Hungarian machine, both identified as operating in 1945.

While this kit in no way measures up to Hasegawa's or Tamiya's latest offerings, it does represent good value considering the cost and decal options.
