DSM Home

Well, here we are again. Welcome back to the home of Crazy Jeff's DSM tweaks and fixes.

You won't find too many go-fast recipies, sales pitches, or 10,000 already answered questions here. No, instead I have assembled a passel of fixes for hard-to-find, diagnose and treat ailments, and a bunch of "creature comfort" enhancements. Since I now own a 2nd Generation car (1995 Talon TSi AWD) and at least the 95's are known for some -um- unique behaviors, I have assembled a section just for them. Click on the links to the left.

My DSM History (Warning - long and boring)

I joined the Talon Digest for the first time back in, I think, 1994. I have always loved these cars, and when I was in college (1987-1991) it was THE car I wanted upon graduation. Of course I didn't stay an engineering major, so I had no money to buy one then. But my friend Matt Jones did. Bastard. He got a spankin' new 1990 Talon TSi AWD. I remember the day he brought it home like yesterday. I also remember the first ride I had in it. I nearly soiled myself - seeing as my car at the time was a 1983 Nissan Stanza... I vowed that I would have one.

Then, after getting a real job, in 1992 I decided it was time. I went to look at two 1990 used AWD's. One a black talon, one a red eclipse. I drove them both and I thought the salesman was gonna hurl. I think I scared him a bit. Anyway, the dealership gave me the old run-around on price (Hold on, lemme talk to the manager) for like 2 hours. I left, angry that they would not sell it to me for the $11,000 I offered. Didn't they realize that really was all I had?

On the way home, I stopped at another Jeep/Eagle dealer. No talons, but they had a 1990 VW Corrado in the lot... So I drove it. It was nice, quick, handled like a rocket sled on rails, and they came down from $12,500 to $11,000 in one swoop. So I bought it on the spot. I really liked that car, but after a couple years I longed for AWD. So I traded it in on a Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 with Quadra-trac. (Not what you expected, huh?)

Well, the Jeep nearly ate me out of house and home, ($$gas$$) so off it went after a couple years. Then one day I spotted a cherry 1991 Talon TSi. Again, not AWD, but it was loaded. And babied. So I bought it. Wooooo hooooo. I was hooked. I drove that car to 130,000 miles before I sold it, and would have kept it forever except I got the deal of a lifetime on my current 1995 Talon AWD. ($7500, loaded,  with only 59,000 miles in 1998!)

So, now I have an infamous "early" 2G. It has some quirks that the 1G's did not have. It has the measly little T25 turbo (not for much longer), and I still long for my 1991. But I LOVE AWD, and actually having a functional trunk. (I like to ski a lot, and honestly with the rear LSD this thing is better in the snow than the Jeep ever was!)

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Hope you enjoy the pages.
