About Me!

That's me, Jared, pictured with my graduation cake on
May 6, 2000...the day I graduated from South Dakota State
University with my BS degree in chemistry

Hello! Thanks for stopping by my webpage.

I graduated from South Dakota State University in
Brookings, South Dakota on May 6, 2000 with a
BS degree in an ACS certified chemistry cirriculum.

I am preparing to enter my first year of graduate school at Iowa
State University in Ames, Iowa.  I'm really excited about this.  I
will be focusing on analytical chemistry and will be studying
for my Ph.D. in analytical chemistry.

Keep your eyes on "The Surface Science Report" as I am
a co-author with Dr. Harrell Sellers from South Dakota State
University on a paper describing kinetic Arrehnius parameters
obtained for nitrogen recombination and dissociation calculations on
numerous transition metals using the UBI-QEP (unity bond index -
quadratic exponential potential) function.  It's a great paper and Dr. Sellers
was a tremendous mentor...I will miss his intellectual conversations very much!

I have been involved in chemistry ever since high school (although I
hated Chemistry I in high school because of a very bad teacher)
but that changed once I took senior chemistry and found out
that chemistry can be fun. I stuck with it and am glad that
I did as I really enjoy chemistry at college.

I have found the college atmosphere to be very rewarding.
As a consequence, I became involved in many
activities at college. I was the President of the South
Dakota State University Chemistry club and treasurer
of the Beta Eta Chapter of Phi Lambda Upsilon (PLU),
a highly distinguished chemical honorary society. In spare time,
I also tutored. I have been recognized by "The National Dean's List," a
company that publishes a book annually commending America's
Outstanding College Students.  I also had the
tremendous opportunity to perform research in combustion synthesis at
the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, SD.  under
Dr. Jan Puszynski.  My research was conducted through the National Science
Foundation's Research Education for Undergraduates (REU) program.  This research
was conducted in June and July of 1999.

Throughout my tenure at South Dakota State University, I performed research in
three areas of chemistry.  During the spring semester of my sophomore year at SDSU,
I completed research under Dr. Jeff Elbert, a physical-organic chemist at SDSU.  My research
was directed towards the separation and characterization of organic compounds via Gas
Chromatography and UV-Vis.  My junior year (both semesters) consisted of research
under Dr. Jim Rice in Analytical/Environmental Chemistry.  In this research, soils were
extracted to obtain trace organic compounds that were analyzed and characterized using GC/MS
(electron impact ion source, quadropole mass analyzer, and electron multiplier transducer).
The research under Dr. Sellers is decribed above.

My interests in academics include: chemistry (duh!!),
biological systems, physics (not the terribly complicated stuff!), geology and it's applications
(excluding mineral nomenclature), and German (awesome language).

I enjoy a lot of outdoor activities. I like fishing and
camping. When I'm not cooped up in the laboratory during
school session, I enjoy hanging around with friends, playing
around with my computer, and reading books (usually
science).

Hope you find this web-page interesting and not just a waste of cyberspace.
Be sure and let me hear your comments, whether they are criticisms, compliments, or suggestions.
